Camillus CUDA MAXX 5.5

lol, that guy must've been crazy or something, because the CUDA Maxx that i had was built like Robocop. that thing felt like it was cut from solid stone, with zero flexing whatsoever. i loved my Maxx, and my only regret i have was selling the danged thing last year.

get one, they're great.

The Camillus Madd Maxx is a wonderfuly sleek TANK. Your dealer is somewhat confused. I think that if the Colab version sucked, Darrell would not actually approve of them. You can buy one with confidance! I love mine and have used the living crap out of it. It is still tight and solid after a couple years of real use and my handling. Get it! You will not regret it.

I have held a custom and a production side-by-side, and there was very little difference. The lock is just as good on the production as on the custom, as far as I could tell.

I own two Camillus CUDA Maxx bowies and a Darrell Ralph Madd Maxx dagger, and yesterday I handled (for the third time :) ) a Camillus 7" spearpoint Maxx.

You can hardly tell the difference among these knives. About the only obvious difference is the curve inside the flipper guards: on the custom version they are smooth; on the production versions, they are rough.

None of them flex, none of the locks are anything but rock solid; the custom locks up with a softer clunk than the productions :D

Your dealer is just trying to get you to buy a much more expensive knife, on which he will undoubtedly make much more of a profit. I wouldn't go to him for anything ever again. I wouldn't trust him. He's not insane; he's dishonest.

The only way to open the blade is with the flippers. You can use the blade side flipper to flick it open or the back side like the assisted openers, even though it isn't an assisted opener -- it's just that smooth. The thumbstuds aren't thumbstds. they sit too close to the handle to use as openers. They are actually blade stops.

You can Wave it open with the flippers. If you convert it to tip-up, you can Wave it directly out of your pocket. Left tip down, it has to be removed from your pocket, and then hooked past the pocket edge.

Your knife dealer doesn't know what he is talking about.

My Maxx locks up fine. I've never had any problems with it.

I will admit that on visual inspection, the thickness of the Ti versus the size of the knife does make the knife APPEAR like it might be on the flimsy side. As is many times the case, appearances are not to be trusted. The current version of the Maxx is rock solid and with arguably one of the strongest locks on the market. The only way I can see your dealer having any evidence to support his claim would be if he had one that either had a very loose pivot screw or the lock was not tensioned enough causing partial engagement. Both of these issues are rare, but do occassionally occur from the factory.

As was already stated, if the knife had any issues with the execution of Darrel's design, Darrel would have stepped in and had those corrected.

Get the Maxx with total confidence. You will be very pleased!

My Maxx 5.5 has none of the things your former dealer describes. If he's not insane and/or greedy then he's just plain ignorant. :barf:

Get the Camillus Maxx and don't look back. You'll be pleased with it. Just ask the many happy knife nuts here. :D

Dealer crazy, forum guys right on, here's some proof. Maxx on the right, BM Skirmish on the left. Who looks flimsy?

I like the customs better, but for the money you can't beat the CUDA Maxx! Probably one of the most well done factory made custom designs.

The Maxx is a great knife and since I upgraded the washers to phosphor bronze washers it is really smooth opening and closing. One warning, I cut myself today  and it took me a little while to figure out how it opend tip down in my pocket. If you put the low carry clip on it, the Maxx will sit low enough in the pocket that the flipper rides below the hem on the pocket and on occassion will "reverse wave" to partially open. I now carry it in my left pocket and find I can open just as quick.

Luckily didn't damage any clothing ;) I pulled it out of my pocket and was putting it in my left hand when I realized I was putting it INTO my left hand. Damn the ultra fine Sharpmaker rods for making me put a scary sharp edge on the beast. I guess it was hungry. Keeps a sharp edge for a long time and has nudged out my Chinook II, 710 HS, Greco Falcon for EDC.

i have a cammilus maxx dagger and a ralph maxx 5.5 ( and a 4" too actually) and the cammilus maxx is a pretty accurate rendition imho, lock up is superb on all of them, of course the ralph customs are better finished (darrels finishing work is some of the best i have seen) but the cammilus knife is a lot like the custom version, i would say the custom maxx seems smoother when opening it to a degree, that and the better finish is the only diff imho, the dimensions are also very close, if not the same.
