Camillus EDC...oh my god...

I liked mine ok I guess, but I did think it was too small so I sold it. It might make a good backup, but as my main use knife it just felt too small.

It reminded me a lot of the kershaw vapor, but the thumbstuds were not near as sharp... (the thumbstuds on the vapor could double as thumbtacks!)

If they made one with a 3.5 - 4" blade I'd get another one.

I recall my little brother saying just those words the other day. He asked me what knife to get for his father-in-law, and I told him to get over to 1SKS and get the man a Camillus EDC. They were giving away the 154CM version for the same price as the 420HC, so I knew he couldn't miss.

"Oh my God! I can't give this thing away!" I think were his words.

It is a nice production piece. The clip is about the strongest I have used on a knife, the grip is comfy, and as Phil stated a couple inches of steel will do just about anything a person needs to do with an EDC. I ain't seen many wooly mammoths, but this thing MIGHT skin one out.

DB - The thumbstud is secured by an allen screw. One side of the stud is male, the other female. Use an allen wrench to loosen it.

Anthony - "User error"? Goodness, I must be even clumsier than I thought! Thanks for your advice, but trust me, I know how to open a knife using the thumbstud, and I can distinguish between a comfort problem and one regarding faulty tecnique. So far as I know, no design works for all people. The EDC thumbstud just doesn't work for me, OK? That's a simple fact, not a criticism. Taking the thumbstud off allows me to enjoy the knife much more.

I liked the looks of the EDC a while back but went with the BOA instead... Now they have the "Old Glory" version of the EDC and I'm back hunting the Web for the best deal... two questions to anyone who owns one...

How durable are the colors on the handle? Paint?

Is is available with the better blade material? 154CM... or is 420HC good enough for daily use?

Would serve as a backup should I lose my Boa (weeping.. weeping..)

For those that may not know, Anthony Lombardo is a well-known author of many knife articles in all the major national knife publications.

Listen to him. He knows what he's talking about.

Knifenerd - I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lombardo. That's the point: deciding that I had committed "user error" is a bit like a doctor diagnosing an illness in a patient he knows nothing about. But I thanked him for his well-meaning advice, and I meant it. I welcome all kinds of input, otherwise I wouldn't post on BF.

It's not just a comfort question, though, as I noted in my first post on this thread. My main objection to the placement of the EDC thumbstud is that it can hang up during deep cutting (a task for which the EDC, with its flat grind, is well suited). This is why I prefer a thumbstud located as close to the tang as is practical. My EDC's deep cutting capability has definitely been enhanced by the removal of the thumbstud.
