Camillus EDC Old Glory... Flag Burning?

So I posted yesterday in the "Most Contented Knife" thread that one of the best purchases I ever made was the Camillus CUDA EDC.

Never did pick up another one, and it got me thinking....

I have a CUDA EDC Old Glory... the one that has the flag painted all over the handles. I never did cotton to the pattern, and mostly got it for a collector piece.

Now I'm thinking that if I don't find me another old EDC, I may just put the wire wheel to this thing and buzz the paint off back down to the metal finish. Voila, got me another CUDA EDC to hang off the pocket.

What are y'all's thoughts? Blasphemy? If you think I shouldn't sandblast it, do you think that way as a collector? Or as a Patriot?

Mulling this over as we speak. Might drink some good American Microbrew and think on it some more, then sober up and think on it more after that. But I'll take your thoughts in between swigs. Lemme know, fellow sharp enthusiasts!

If you picked it up becuase it has flags on it and your intent was to keep it as a collector piece, then I'd leave the flags on it.

As to whether or not sandblasting the flags off it would be some sort of unpatriotic desecration, I don't think that is really "General Knife Discussion" subject matter.

At the end of the day, it's just a knife. It's yours to do with as you will. No one should be offended, freaking out over you modifying it, or turning into a political statement. A knife sometimes is just a knife.

Personally, I find American Flag decorations a bit tasteless. I would post it For Trade. Maybe someone else would appreciate it?

The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like...

A collector is a display piece. If your going to EDC it's going to get wear and damage do whatever you want with it. Modding isn't blasphemy.

I agree that modding is a non-issue. Taking a video peeing on the knife and uploading it to youtube would be considered un-patriotic and would probably get you arrested.

Or would be considered high art and make you millions.
Could go either way. ;)

LOL! Hadn't thought of the "High Art" angle... but my neighborhood contains more rednecks than hipsters, so I'm gonna avoid that route.

I appreciate you folks chiming in. I think I'll dash over to the Knifemaker's Custom Shop and see what those artistic chaps can come up with.

An image of the flag isn't an actual flag.

Another good point.

Besides, if the mod is done and no pictures are taken and shared of it in progress, no one will be offended.

I think the intent to offend and visibly show disrespect to the country is the rationale behind no flag burning.

No big deal to remove the flag. I have a great SAK that is hidden in a backpack I never use because the US flag scales are obnoxious. Needs new scales, bad.

Make it how you want it so it sees the light of day.

Hey, I'm offended if you're offended.
Truth be told, most people don't care. The majority of our country has forgotten what the flag stands for.

I personally dont care. IMHO something made with an image of a flag and an actual flag arent the same thing. And at the end of the day it is your object to do with what you wish. I cant see a good reason not to do as you wish with it.

K.O.D., I'm sure there's plenty of folks who still remove their caps as the colors are presented. I'm a veteran in a long line of veterans... a line that goes back to my Great Great Great Great (Yes, that's 4 Greats!) Grandfather, who enlisted in the Continental Army on July 22nd, 1776. I'm in good company.

My other concern was that I'd bust all the color off, only to have somebody go off like: "OMG, That was an Old Glory!! There were only Blahblahblah of those made! How could you...I've been looking for one of those for blahblahblah.."

I got it because I figured they only painted up a certain number of them, and now Camillus (USA) isn't going to be making another one any time soon. But I'm not really finding that I want to put pieces away for their collectability... I'm finding that if I have a knife, I want it in my pocket slicing stuff up. And here we are with this piece. I'm certain there are some talented knife craftsmen who could make it look way cooler than it does now.

BobW made a good point... I might find out if somebody needs it to fill out their collection before I mod it. I'm always willing to pass along a knife if I know somebody else would get more enjoyment out of it than I would.

Images of the flag are discarded constantly. I'm old enough to remember huge sections in the papers every Fourth of July filled with ads for sales festooned with the American flag. There are also plenty of clothes with Old Glory on them, that get thrown out sooner or later.
