Camillus made Remington Repros -- Steel Type?

I also was wondering something about the more recent Camillus made Remington Repros in the classic models like the "Tracker" and "Bush Pilot".

I saw something recently that suggested these were made with 0170-6C steel, which as I understand it is the Camillus trade name for what Case calls chrome vanadium steel. Does anyone know if this is correct? I always assumed they were made from 440A or some other middling quality stainless. If they are truly 0170-6C, I'm going to start accumulating them.

Thanks all.

Jim

All Camillus made Remington repros were stainless, earlier ones were 440B, later ones 440A.

By repros, I am refering to the Bullet knives.
Some of the regular line knives (the Carbon steel ones) were made using 0170-6C

Case CV is NOT 0170-6C!

Thanks very much, that's more or less what I thought. I was talking about the Bullet repros so thanks again.

Are these Remington knives made by Camillus?

They had several different models commemorating different guns.

Just FYI below are pics of the paper that came with my '94 Remington Bullet Camp knife. It says 440 steel but doesn't indicate what type of 440. The wording about the steel is the same for all of mine from '89 to '94.

Phil mentioned that some of the Camillus-built Remingtons were 440-B and, later, 440-A. Was this the case for the Camillus stainless models also? If so, approximately when was the switch made from 440-B to 440-A? Thank you.

Hi Rick!!

It was 440B (82 - 88 Bullets?), then 440A (89 - 96?) and finaly 420 when the 440 was no longer available in coil. I am guessing at the dates though! :o

Those knives were NOT made by Camillus.
Therefore they are NOT made of 0170-6C.

Phil, i have the red/yellow moose pictured above. mine is a really solid, well made knife. i had believed it to be made by Camillus (why i bought it [for $7.51]). so, who did make it, and knowing that, what most likely is the steel ? thanks, seems there's no end to surprises in the knife world, roland

Roland,

I would guess at $7.51 it is made in China!?
All the Camillus made Bullets were dated & marked "Made in USA"

I am appalled Remington has devalued the Bullet knives with Chinese knock offs! The Bullet Knives were something they used to understand the value of. Oh well, anything for a quick buck I see. :barf:

Geez Phil - are you sure? We did do those patterns. I don't remember them being carbon tho' Thought they were stainless and no scotchbrite. Tell-tale sign is the buff strop on the tang.

Phil, that $7.51 was an ebay auction. identical ones usually go for $30 and up. i was lucky, almost no one bidding, but it is an identical knife to the moose pictured in this post. if mine is made in China, then so is that one.
tang has Remington along outline of cartridge, with MADISON above, and N.C. USA below, and " Remington trade mark" as 2 line etch. so it does in fact not say where it is made. merely that the Remington co. is in Madison N.C.
maybe you are right about made in China; but they've been out awhile, so surely it would be widely known by now ? v. interesting ! roland
p.s. i do not see any buff strop marks on tang, BUT, i'm not exactly sure what i am looking for.

Rick,

They are Chinese knock jobs.
Look closer.....
Look at the tang stamps, we never used those. We also stamped all blades.
Roland said reverse tang is etched, we never did that!!
The bullet shield was only used on the annual year knife.
Blade shapes & nailmarks are wrong on the 5798 (Banana) pattern.
We never did a year Bullet with that God Awful handle color.

I will stake my complete lack of reputation on the fact those were NOT made by Camillus Cutlery Company!

As to where they were made..........
I am in contact with the American Vendor that is making some Remingtons, including the 2007 bullet knife, & those are not their work.
I know it is difficult from a picture, but they smell Chinese to me!

Phil, it is the blade that has the etch "Remington" in script with "TRADE MARK" in smaller block letters below it. there is only one tang stamp the remington one on the "front" side of clip blade. i.e. exactly like the one pictured in this post.
so, made in China ! fooled again ! i get the feeling most of the folks who visit this forum are also under the impression that these were made by Camillus, as i have not seen a post suggesting otherwise. roland

a thought: does anyone have a connection to Remington ? would they not have all the contract documents, etc. relating to knives with their name and logo ? or has this trademark been sold or leased out ? it must be trackable. roland

Well confirmed with Marvin at BRK that they bought them directly from Camillus. Thus, either this conspiracy goes very deep or you have missed something Phil.

They are superior in quality to any of the MooreMaker composites or Stanley (Camillus made) products I have on hand; so if they are not made by Camillus then I may have been giving Camillus too much credit to my customers. I can't speak to their comparison with Camillus branded items as I have never been able to sell them at a profit. But, agreed that these are butt ugly....
