For the people that are planning to get the Camillus OVB Fisk Bowie. What are your plans for the knife? Will the knife be a user? Will the knife be a collection/investment piece only? That's one great looking knife.

It would be a user. If I wanted an investment piece I would order one from Jerry and wait 4 years. Even then it would probably end up being a user. I hate to have a knife sitting in a drawer.

I've used my most expensive customs without hesitation, but I have no real need to use this Bowie. I just think it's going to be an exceptional knife to own. I know Will & Jerry knocked themselves out to make this knife, they pulled out all the stops, from the grind on the blade to the maple they used right down to the frog on the leather sheath. I can't wait to get mine.

For the folks that are going to use it, what are you going to use it for? Just curious.

Mine will go in a zipper case and will only come out of the safe for occasional fondling. I don't really have a need for a bowie but this knife just has a look. I tend to use my customs(though I'm starting to get into super nice collector customs) and collect production pieces that I like.

For what, I don't know. I'll stick 'er in the big ol' Jimmy with me and see what adventurous mischief we can get into together.

Phil, it'll complement the Lonewolf nicely, dontcha think? Both will be passed to the boy some day. :)

Mine will definitely be a user! Sure hate for a fixed blade that good looking to sit in a drawer all the time ;)

Call me crazy, but I kinda cringe at the thought of abusing a $200 fixed blade... this is probably why i'll never buy a Sebenza, sure it's great, but I think i'd be too afraid to use it.

thats what i used to think, too, young cutter.

this one,i dont know yet, have to wait till i get it before i decide.
may wind up carrying it,at leat during winter and can conceal it with a coat or sweater.

Don - that's certainly one way to handle it. I wish I could get one of Jerry's customs...this way I won't use the real deal and only use the Camillus :)

Folk's, I know I will be in the minority, but to me the Fisk/Cammilius knife is just a possibly well made Camillius knife and not a collectable. Take the time and money and invest them in waiting for a real Fisk which will certainly be a knife worth owning. I have waited years for custom knives and it has been well worth it. the current vogue of custom makers putting thier names to commercial cutlery and watching individuals heaping adulation on what are factory blades, has me wondering, have we lost our senses? These are just factory blades! They may be better made than the run of the mill factory blades but that doesn't make them custom or collectable.- Dick

Hey Dick, of the 500 or so people that will buy this knife for one reason or another, most will never get the chance to own a custom knife made by Jerry Fisk. Where did you ever get the idea that only custom knives are worth collecting? Or that a collaboration with a custom maker is a bad thing? I'm sure there are production knives that have increased in value above many custom knives. Don't get me wrong, I do encourage folks here to look at, find and buy custom knives that are within their budget. But, I'd be some kind of Elitist Dork to suggest that customs are the only thing worthy of collecting.

I hope you don't mind if I call you Dick?

Dexter,

I agree. I would like to have on of Jerry's customs but it is not likely to happen in the near future. :(

So, this is likely to be as close as I get for a while.

To all, I am not an elitest, I only think that if you want a Fisk, put in your order, save your money and you will obtain one. 30 years ago I thought that waiting 7 years for a Loveless was too much. I finally ordered one from Bob, got it and am very happy with it. All the Loveless designed knives I have passed up in the intervening 30 years, would not equal one real Loveless. I also think the knife collectors are being manipulated into thinking that if the factory knife has a custom makers name on it, than collectability is guaranteed. Not so. I have seen some very bad authorised designs and some good, but none to equal the original. Don't think that you cannot obtain what you want. We seem to be in an era of instant gratification. I can tell you that waiting 5 or 10 years is well worth it!- Yes, you can call me Dick.

Custom collaboration factory piece or the real thing - who cares?? The name of the game of knife collecting is buy what you like. I may not be able to afford a genuine custom Fisk (for that matter, have the patience to wait for one :) ) but I can tell you for sure I will be very happy with the production piece.

I do agree that factory collaborations are not a replacement for the real thing. However, I think they are an excellent idea. It puts designs of makers into hands of people who can't afford the custom deal, or people like me and Dex, who have 17 second attention spans and won't wait 4+ years on a knife. This one not being the case, as Jerry Fisk is one of the best know makers around, sometimes a collaboration gets a maker's name and designs out to a crowd that may never have heard of the maker. Once the name status is there, if they like the design, they may start digging for info on the maker and purchasing custom stuff. I think collaborations are a great way to introduce collectors/users to designs by well known or sometimes relatively unkwnon makers.

Jeremy, you hit the nail on the head. There have been several instances in which I bought a custom collaboration knife and later down the road buying the real deal. But in the case of the OVB, it will satisfy my itch for the custom version. I know for a fact that it will not be an ordinary production bowie, so far it is the best looking production bowie I have ever seen. I am aware of the fact that it may not have any collector value, but that's not why I am buying it. In fact, I do not care what s/n I get....I am pumped at the fact that I am guaranteed one of the 500 that will be made :)

BTW - 17 seconds?? I am lucky to make it to 5 :D LOL
