Camillus Robo Dominator vs. Emerson Commander - they are very similar in price, blade lengths are similar.

Bill Taylor designed "Robo-Powered Assisted Opening" mechanism vs. "wave" - which is faster?

Is the "Robo-Powered Assisted Opening" mechanism reliable? I heard some Kershaw speed assists break.

"Robo-Powered Assisted Opening" mechanism -- Opening can be accomplished with the ambidextrous thumb stud or by using the "flipper" incorporated into the blade, which when open forms a substantial guard. You need to press the flipper almost all the way down to the frame for the assisted opening to take place.

Camillus Robo Dominator has better steel - S30V stainless.

Kind of comparing apples to oranges. The commander opens with the "wave" a hook on the back of the blade thats strategically placed to catch on the top of your pocket and pull the blade open as it comes out of your pocket.
The camillus knife is an assisted opener. Once its in your hand, you manually open it part way and it snaps open the rest of the way by itself.
That wave is faster provided you get it on the first try, but its also notorious for tearing up pockets. The assisted opener, is probably a hair faster than your average one hander, and it shouldn't be hard on your pockets.
I'd worry more about which knife you like better overall in terms of style, materials etc. than how fast it is to open.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that "robo-dominator" is the stupidest name for a knife, ever?

If you want to start a thread to find the stupidest name for a knife ever, then do so and get ready for some greats. I got a dollar that says that the Robo-Dominator is not the stupidest one you'll hear. There be some doooozies out there.

At any rate, if you are any fan of knives what-so-ever, then you get an image of a DDR piece when somebody mentions "Dominator". Furthermore, with all the assisted opening stuff going around today, you can guess by the name that it is a Ralph design with a mechanical kicker.

I had that one figgered out immediately, I'll bet hundreds of other people did as well. For this reason, I think the name is a good one. It may sound silly, but it tells its story.

Dominator is a leave spring so it *may* offer more reliability than the spead safe. I would expect the deployment speed to be similar to the larger Speed safe knives. But i dont think anyone has a Dominator yet.

Usually waved emersons are the fastest, but you do make some sacrifices when buying an emerson, i would suspect that the Dominator is going to be in a different league than emerson mechanically.
