Just scored a NIB version off ebay for 14 bucks...I've heard good things about camillus how do these rate?

Got pics? Be nice to see it.

IMO, they rate pretty well. Congrats, and you'll have to decide whether to put her to use. Since Camillus closed, she may have enough collector value to be worth keeping her new.

Me, I'd be proud to carry it.

thx - cpr

I just bought one, too. Seems like a pretty good knife. I had to work to get it sharp originally, but it's nice and tight, and I plan to give mine a workout, as God and Camillus intended. My take on it is, that you could put it away for 10-15 years and maybe make a couple of dollars on it, if that, or consider it a great bargain on a user knife. I made my choice, but it's up to you.

she'll be a user....they all are. mileage and stories make a knife much more valuable IMHO Thanks....

I have one also. It's a bit rough, but it looks like a good knife. There's a strong resemblance to my large Cold Steel stockman, which is not surprising since Camillus used to make the Cold Steel slipjoints.

My CS knife is my best cutting stockman. I'd carry it more, but I just don't like the delrin handles. If the Camillus is anything like the CS, I'd say you have a heck of a knife.

I have to post picks onf mine up. Just got it off the bay for $11.00.Seems beefy, but you can see all the stamp out marks on the bolsters. Thought F/F would be better.I have 2 options, File up and clean up and do finish work on the bolsters and liners, or leave it alone and hold onto it for a millenium.

The Rough Cut series are nice work knives!

They flooded the market towards the end, and 10-15 bucks was the usual price range, but what a bargain! Especially if you snagged a carbon one.

It's a great user knife - I liked it so much one I got, I got a second one strictly for "insurance".

Question, is the shield an indicator if the blade is carbon or stainless? Both of mine have oval shields opposed to the round shield pictured by The Last Confederate.

.. Sunny did you get my email??

Got it & replied Amigo!.:)

How do you tell the carbon ones?

As far as I can see you can't tell. There doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

true story: One of the good fellows I pal around with here locally purchased one from the same vendor I did at a local G&K show here in West Palm Beach. His had no shield but much nicer looking derlin than mine and the f&f was superb(mine was vg at best). Three weeks later, he shows me a knife that's starting to patina on two, out of the three blades.. We were like, huh, what the #%*!. Come to realize he got a mixed batch of blade, SS & 1095. We figured the cutlers that were putting these together were probably having a good LOL over it.:D

I don't really care what combination you get, IMO, any knife that you get this cheap made in the USA by Camillus is worth every cent.

For those of you who love Camillus (like me) you might check out your local Boy Scout store. Camillus made some of the knives for BSA. I think BEAR is making them now. (According to the store employees, the Bear brand, unfortunately, isn't as good in fit & finish.)

When my son joined, I decided to buy him a SAK, marked as the 'Official Knife - BSA'. Well, lo & behold, I go in to the local BSA store, and find out they still have a pile of the old Camillus BSA knives, and some at 50% discount, too. I buy one or two every time I go in there, simply because Camillus is gone. If you can get them at the discount, they're worth it.

I read in one thread here that the BSA knives were some of the last to be shipped before Camillus closed up shop.

As far as I have seen, no. It appears, that Camillus used whatever shields they had on hand at any given time.

I have been told, that Camillus used parts left from other contracts to make up these Rough Cuts, and that's why you see so many variations.

I have two roughcut stockman both have oval sheilds, and both have carbon sheepsfoot and spey blades, but stainless clip point blades. Kind of an ultimate compromise to the carbon vs stainless debate. They are solid knives and I like the character they develop after use. Joe

Well Joe,

Thanks for that!. That again verifies that my account of my friend Jed's RC knife on my post # 14 was not the only one that they put out their... Cool..

Sunnyd, Schrade had some knives with the same "issue" before their demise, I have a 34ot that has 2 carbon blades and 1 stainless. Joe
