Camo/natural vs bright and visible

The name says it all.. When choosing a BoB, USP, or other gear do you tend to use less obvious colors? (Camo, Olive drab, khaki, etc) or do you grab a bright (yellow, blue, silver, red) tent and get ready for when the SHTF?

I tend to stick to tactical black, olive drab, and camo when I can get it. I'd prefer, in a survival situation, to see others before they see me. I try to prepare for typical circumstances : invaders (foreign or domestic) natural disaster, terrorist attack.

I blend into nature.

I usually go with olive drab or forest green gear. If I want to be seen I carry a blaze orange poncho.

My gear is more subdued. OD, dark/light khaki, plaids in greens and grays, etc. Black doesn't work well in daylight and any dark color that blends will work at night. If traveling, terrain is so varied here, that camo just doesn't work in most instances. Well......except for the new mil issue digital, that stuff is amazing. Anyways, I don't own any, but have read from those in the know that have seen it in everything from urban to deep forest and it works. But, wearing it in a situation where others are looking for insurgents, wearing camo wouldn't be a good idea, IMO. If I were needing to hide from people, I would be more inclined to wear some kind of ghillie (?) suit and stay put in good cover till it's clear. That is assuming I took care not to leave tracks to where I was hiding.

your right the new military digital camo is great. I worked at a textile mill in upstate NY when the military placed a "test order" of over 100k yards.. Damn straight a grabbed 30 ft of it or so.. everyone did

Sadly, they apparently contracted the rest of the print job to a company in Asia... I guess saving money by contracting it offshore is more important then securing 1,000 or so american jobs for the next few years.

I havent been in a place where I can see myself in my surroundings... but when I do I'm going to go on TV claiming I've had an out of body expierence, but my camo's were so nice I couldnt see myself! :D

Perhaps the Asian workers did not steal any of the order.

Perhaps, instead of stealing the material, they produced material in addition to the ordered amount and made their own uniforms in order to infiltrate our peoples lines. One thing for sure, you can get imported BDUs in the identical material and pattern from......guess who.

i dont buy camo tents and camo bags. i just go with subtle colors that dont stand out but if it was in a tree you would not mistake it for leaves.

Actually, the material we "stole" we called factory seconds. typically 10% of any given order is seconds... and all seconds get throw out / given away / donated... so yea..

but in all honesty, in the US, a typical printing is $5-40 a yard, depending on fabric used, the dyes, etc..

Korea can do the same job for $2-$10 a yard.

I was getting paid $18 an hour... they get paid approx $2 an hour.. so yea.. i wonder why they contracted it to them..

I also usually wear natural colours such as khaki, olive green, creams and beiges etc when I'm out in the woods and in the wild it also helps with tracking as you blend more into the surroundings so you can get closer to wildlife.

So what wilds have you been in Scott?

I just wear some green trousers and a black fleece or green pullover if i'm stalking.

I saw it at either majors surplus or sportsmans guide. They had the US army and Marine patterns if my memory serves me correctly.

That sucks. :(

I don't use obnoxious colors for simple outdoor etiquette reasons, although it seemed like a few years ago that was the marketing trend. I do use a dull-red daypack; it's not too intrusive, but it's easy to spot if I lay it down. Had a black daypack that was the worst... spent hours looking for that damn thing.

My tent has always been a green Eureka Timberline. It doesn't stand out if you're far enough off the trail, but it's easy to find if you're looking for it and are in the general area. My old framepack was green; my new one is black. Both are good.

I do steer clear of camoflage or military colors.

Yeah...

One of the things I think needs to be addressed is to have a tarp or something that is very easily spotted from the air. If all you have is stuff that blends in, if you need help... how is anyone going to find you?

Found a boonie hat on lightfighter that is the digital print.
