Probably not an original question, but which is your favourite Spydie (folder) for camp and survival purposes?
Bye

The Military makes quite a good food preparation knife with it's flat ground blade, is strong and lightweight. I can't imagine many cutting tasks that it wouldn't handle with aplomb.

The Chinook. Those folders are pretty darn stout, and that little blade packs alot of cutting power!.:).

The Endura, the Military, and the Ayoob would all be worth looking at.

Good luck,
Allen.

The Military.

It is the ultimate survival folder for the backwood boonies or the concrete jungle. ;)

I usually take a 4" fixed blade with me in which case my favorite is is the calypso jr. Otherwise, it would be the Wegner.

Large Dyad.

I normally don't go into the woods with just one knife though. So actually the Dyad would be in addition to my current primary fixed blade which is an old Camillus KA-BAR pattern in one of the new kydex sheaths; soon to be replace by a John Greco MST II-thanks to RattlerXX ;).

I carry the Dyad with the clip removed in an old .45 Canvas magazine pouch next to my Bucktool. Note this is for 'camping' not 'hiking'.

For hiking, or if weight is an issue, I would go with a larger folder-i.e. Military or Wegner (my idea of two perfect large Spyderco folders)with a Dyad Jr. or Mini-Dyad in my pocket.

I have found the versatility of the Dyad to be a real asset when I know I will be cutting a wide variety of material.

OK, then if we are to consider now discontinued models as well, then DEFINITELY the Wegner. My favorite is the plain edge, but for all around use I'm sure the combination edge would work very well indeed. The Wegner is heavy duty.

If it were likely to be tough going, with less emphasis on food prep then the Chinook would be great. Real great.

I have no idea what's "best," all I have is a "meager" lwt, PE Endura. I like it a LOT.

I recently went camping with my wife, and I toted a SAK Spartan, a Leatherman Wave and the Endura, which was clipped to my pocket at all times, even when fishing in the pond, chest deep in water (<i>Note to ATS-55 critics - not a bit of rust either</i>). I can't tell you how many times during our weekend in the forest my wife asked me to hand her my "sharp knife." Not knowing or caring about the difference between a Spyderco and a spider, that's how she always refers to it, as my "sharp knife." :)

P.S. In order to preserve my rep' as a bonified knife knut, I need to point out here that the SAK and Wave are also damn sharp - always! :D

First Choice: Wegner
Second : Military

Prefer both with partially serrated edges, but plain edge might be better for true O.S. survival long term.

I've changed my opinion and I agree with Mongrel: the large Dyad has got to be the best all-around camping Spyderco.
And the weight is still under 5oz.

Good luck,
Allen.

Bear, your question may not be original but it is fun to reply to. I favor the combo-edge Wegner. It has a nice belly to slice things (I think this is its strongest feature); it has a strong tip (I feel it's more stout than the tip on the Military); it has an ergonomic, slip-resistant handle; and the combo portion of the blade is nice for cutting rope, etc.

Yes, it would be very difficult to beat the combination edge Wegner as an all-around folding camp knife. Last I heard, these were still on "clear-out" sale at SMKW for about sixty bucks; which is about half price or less.

It looks as though SMKW does not have any more of the combo edge Wegners on sale. None were found when I searched the site.

For new Wegners (plain and combo edge) at $69.95, check out Martin B. Retting gun shop:

http://www.retting.com/inventorycontents.htm

I was just in there and they had both models on closeout (website doesn't list plain edge, so maybe they sold it, but you can always call to double-check). Also have a bunch of other great knives, even though they are traditionally a firearms dealer.

I use the G-10 Rookie with plain edge blade. It works perfect for my uses around water and camp chores like food prep. Mine is going on 4 years of use now and I picked up a spare over a year ago and haven't needed to use it yet. For a larger blade I use the Starmate Plainedge. The Starmate is a great knife and is very slim and lightweight. I picked up a Moran drop point but haven't had the chance to put it to use yet.
