CAMP BIG or go home.

As you get older, I think many of use think about camping "big". Not saying sleeping in your little back pack tent is not a good thing, but I would do it only when I have to. Car camping can be a lot of fun. Camping with a trailer can be great too.

I'm still young-ish, but I like camping big. I like being outdoors; I don't enjoying "roughing" it. Give me a big tent and air mattress any day...lol.

The great thing about car camping is that you don't need to keep track of the ounces. You're free to bring as much steel as you want, like this foot and half long khukuri.

Fantastic photos Dwight! I may have to get me one of those camp knives. I keep looking for an old BS knife like the one I had as a kid, but can't find it.

Is that a camp knife in Charlie's case in this photo from the Oregon Knife Show?

Yes, I had a couple of non-CC Camp knives at the show; they disappear quite readily!
It took people a while to warm up to them since I had them made, but then the dam broke!!! All gone!! I doubt that Bill will make any more for some while to come.

Posted this picture before. Aside from my tent and cooler this is what I need when I go camping.

Just as an aside, when the Texas Camp Knives came out I called GEC and asked if they would be coming out with a stainless version. I was told "Do you know how hard it was to fit all those blades in the knife? If the cutlers have anything to say about it we will never make those knives again!"

Once in a while, it's nice to get off "the Porch" and rough it for awhile. My lovely (and supportive) wife and I recently took a camping trip to north central Washington state (the other Washington). We decided to CAMP BIG old style this year and photograph some of the "BIG STUFF" we needed. :)

Of course we needed BIG KNIVES::)

And, of course, we had to have a little dawg with a BIG ATTITUDE::D

Show us your photos of your latest campin' trip!
What's the fixed blade?
And is that a miniature schnauser?

Barry Interesting Big stuff, landscape is most impressive. I generally need a Big Drink before venturing outside, this can compromise the whole trip:D

But seriously, nice array of pix on this thread and there's no better excuse for getting out knives or hatchets than the call of the wild:thumbsup:

thanks, Will

Camillus, the knife is a Randall Made 5" #7 with a #6 grind. The #7 comes in two lengths - 41/2" or 5" and has a different grind than this one. The #6 is their steak knife but you can have that grind done on the #7 too. As far as I know the #7 is the only other knife you can request a #6 grind on, I find it a little more utilitarian than the normal grind.

Love the photos guys, especially Abbydaddy's 10,000 year old traditional knife, as well as the ones from Horsewright on 'the mountain of gold'; nice string of ponies, and particularly your big chestnut! Looks like a very fine camping trip, and fine bladesmithing as well Dave!

Alan, my wife is far and away better looking and better tempered than I am! :D
The guitar is a Zager built by an ex-musician turned luthier, and is a fine sounding solid (not laminated ply) wood guitar very similar to a Martin at a fraction of the cost (especially if it is a 'second' like mine).
Jake is half mini-schnauzer and half jack Russell terrier, a breed I would not recommend to those with little patience or who don't understand 'dog speak', although he very nearly can say 'apple' in human English!
I think your idea of camping would be well received here in the greater Puget Sound area; cruise the San Juan Islands and inside passage anyone?:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Dwight, that is first class campin' right there! Very nice outfit and I sure a lot more comfortable than my tent! My wife would never agree to camp on that spot, however. She has to close her eyes when I drive up steep mountain roads that are nearly straight up on the driver side and the opposite on the passenger side, but what a great view she is missing!:eek::eek::eek:

Kamagong, I just had a feeling you'd have a khukuri along! Your tent looks quite comfy and much less abused than my own, poor ratty thing that it is....

Jer, the big camp knife is a Bark River Teddy II, and is nearly a full pound of A-2 steel; it is unsurpassed for marshmallow sticks! lol

Barry:D Got ya! I have not heard of Zager, but it seems to be a really nice guitar. Great if it's less than a Martin. I have a 25 year old Taylor. It's a great guitar but a little temperamental with changing humidity.

I would LOVE to get my boat on to Puget, but I think it take me a year to get there:( And, I would probably have to sell my knife collection to buy the fuel. Boats are kind of dumb actually.

This knife picked up a patina just from going out on the boat for a weekend.

Perhaps, but there's no way this thing ages as well as yours. The box said it has a capacity for eight, but I have no idea how you'd pull that off. Maybe a couple of adults, with six kids, but there'd still be no space for bags.

The khukuri wasn't the only knife I brought.

There's a gaucho-inspired knife for food prep, as well as a Kephart type for paring and other small knife tasks. Not to mention the SAK that lives in my pack and the ever-present slipjoint in my pocket.

Nostalgia Bump!! What nice camping knives and camping people in this thread!!:)
Nevermind the sites!!!!!
I was digging around for a #98 Camp knife, and found this one, which I stashed away in 2016!!
Not my SFO, but one of a few Northfields made for GEC. It was a lot lighter in color, as I recall, when I put it away. Looks like ancient "elephant" today!!:cool:Smooth White NF 1.jpg Smooth White NF 2.jpg
A little larger than 4 3/4" long!! For Big camping!!:D

Wow!!! That really changed a lot from the original color. Any idea why?

Guys, it had the original factory oil on it, and the oil looked kind of dark (like cola), and still did before I wiped it for the scans. I suspect it was the oil over two years. It was wrapped in the original brown waxed paper as well. Otherwise, I don't know??:rolleyes:
