Sense it's the storm of the century in the Northwest and I'm hiding from the rain and wind I decided to make a pair of camp knives.... I submit to you the Camp Choppa. I had a piece of .2x1.5" 1084 that was the perfect length for a chopper inspired camp knife.

This should be a useful tool.

Tomorrow I'll do some cleanup work and get ready for heat treatment

May I ask what beveling jig if any at all you used to get the bevels using the belt sander ?
Andy

I use a pair of welding vice grips and a piece of angle iron. I adjusted my tool rest by 7 degrees and ground away, it works good enough. I am saving up for a big boy grinder now, the little Craftsman is a bit overwhelmed but still gets the job done.

Awesome
Thanks for the tips.
Hopefully Santa will get you that grinder
👍

I remember doing a texture like that with a dremel, Still felt my thumb two weeks after that!
How did you do it?

Ah man what happened to your knife it looks all bumpy, and you had such a nice grind line to.

I used my Dremmel with a wide cut off wheel. 😁

I just dabbed (tapped) the wheel to make a little texture.... And hide a small wow in my grind line.

These are definitely bigger knives than I normally make but there starting to take shape. This is for a buddy that spends a lot of time in the back country. I still have some work to do.

3/16" 1084 treated to 59rc. Primary bevel to 0.15", micarta scales and pins with orange lines and a brass lanyard tube.

Thanks for looking.

What do you use to do the small radius work on the handle?

I rough ground it with the edge of the platen, then cleaned it up with a dremal then put a small drum in the drill press and finished it off.

Thanks. The small radius stuff is one of the things I don't like about my 2x42

That and the tracking!! I grow tired of chasing the belt around....I'll be graduating to a big boy grinder soon.

The small wheel and my Esteem flipping horizontal has cut down the time on those inside curves tremendously. What used to take forever and look "meh" is now as easy as the outside curves.

Knowing what I know now I would buy (if I hadn't bought a 2x72) a cheapo spindle sander and just go through sanding drums rather than go back to using the edge of the platen and then a file and then something round wrapped in sandpaper...

Like the orange & copper together. I've used red with copper, but the orange just looks better to me. Great job on the pair, hope he likes what you've done & it should last for a "few" generations to come. The grip looks plenty "grippy" & I like the canvas micarta for this one. Job well done.
