camp griptilian

In my experience with both steels side by side 154cm tends to chip much more than ATS-34. Personally I think ATS-34 is a superior steel. I don't know much about steel composition and I could care less, but I know from experience (at least mine) that 154cm is one of my least favorite stainless steels. Could it be the different companies heat treats? Possibly, but I'd much rather have 34 over 154.

As far as a camp griptilian, I think it really depends on what you are doing with the knife. For camping I like to take a stainless for non bushcraft stuff, food prep, etc. Then a nice carbon steel knife for any batoning, chopping, etc.

A lot depends on the heat treatment, there was some bad lower quality 154CM around for awhile.

Given the same quality heat treatment they are basically the same.

Is that a benchmade 806 without the BK coating and with a round hole ?

It's a hybrid - the S30V blade from an 806-701 AFCK, combined with the G10 handle from an 805 TSEK.

It's an old pic. I eventually swapped the blades back over and sold the AFCK and kept my 805 TSEK.

Obviously, buying a Griptilian was one of the worst decisions of your life. You should immediately get rid of it, even if you have to take a loss, or give it away.

Based upon my thousands and thousands of hours of surfing the Internet, I would say that you should never venture into your back yard, much camping, with carrying anything less than a 28-inch blade (non-serrated, of course) of S67V steel hardened to Rockwell 81.3, hand-forged by certified virgins under the light of a full moon.

All attempts at humour aside, if you are happy with the Griptilian, I see no reason to rush out and buy another knife simply because someone on an Internet forum doesn't like the steel in its blade.

My recommendation, if you have the money, would be to buy an RC-4 for camping and carry the Griptilian as a backup. The advantages of a fixed-blade over a folder have been endlessly beaten to death elsewhere if you want to look them up. However, my biggest complaint about the RC-4 is that the handle is about an inch shorter than my rather large hands would like.

If you're happy with the Griptilian, then stick with it and save your money for more important things, like men/women of negotiable morals and cheap wine.
