I had the joy of attending one of Steve Watt’s classes this weekend. The focus of the class was with traditional camping, on old style stoves, oil lamps, camp note books, how to repair items with sewing kits, and many more things. I will be writing a report up for woodsmonkey, but here are some pictures! David Wescott even joined in for the fun.

That is awesome. I have seen Steve Watts many times on various history shows, just saw him this weekend as a matter of fact on an axe show on Discovery. Also enjoyed his book as well. And of course Dave Wescott is a godfather of primitve tech. I wish I could have attended this!

I love that last tarp setup!! Really neato!

I have such a desire to learn from these primitive gurus-wish they were closer to home!

Was Steve Watts on the cover of backwoodsman a couple of months ago? Nice pic's! Love the dietz lantern setup, does it work well for light cooking or is it gimmicke? Been wanting one for awhile.
regards

I tried and tried but just could not fit a wood chair into my Maxpedition bottle holder. Could you post an explanation?

Looks and sounds like a great time.

I have David Wescotts book. It is a great read and the old time photos are so cool.

Its great to be in NC, I'm really lucky to be around guys like these.

awesome pics..but I have to ask whats with the hats? Civil War repro?

Once you start wearing some of these hats...you can't stop. Tilley or these, I'm usually covered :P

"see the hat, see the man"

I milked about a thousand cows with the light of three or four of those oil lamps. Thats all the light we had in the barn and just a few years before that, thats all we had for lights in the house. I was 10 or twelve before we got Rural electric out as far as we lived. Not much light compared to a coleman white gas lantern.

How does one go about attending one of these courses? Would you be willing to provide contact infor for eithes Steve or David's courses? Thx

The aesthetics of the camp are wonderful! Those pictures are a treat for the eyes, and there are no "popping" colors to rob from the beautiful location.

Wood chairs, in place of the more common packable nylon chairs.
The old world lanterns, in place of bright plastic / LED lanterns.
The canvas tents and canopies, in place of the common day glow "outdoor performance gear".

Am I the only one who see this camp this way?
