Camp Knife Challenge Entrants !

For me the answer is simple. I need to sell it. I was up front about this from the start. I do hope it goes to someone who will use it, and enjoy it. But this is my full time gig now, and I need to sell it. I apologize if this shows a lack of class. My kids table trumps my honor I guess.

I'm pretty much in agreement- I'd do a charity auction or raffle if that was a consensus- which is why I had asked the question. At the same time, I've got 2 tots and a wife in nursing school.

I don't see anything dishonorable in selling the knife- it's what we do- and honestly, it may be somewhat collectible in the end.

I think I already posted my reason...but will be glad to elaborate.

I don't want to sell a used knife.
I don't want to auction a used knife.
I don't want to giveaway a used knife.

I have nothing against charitable auctioning...but these were (hopefully) put to some good testing...and while it might be fun for someone to "own the knife that Brian tested"....I'd like that person to be me. :p

I have nothing against selling prototypes, as long as they are fairly represented that way.

There are my reasons. I has nothing to do with not being charitable, and everything to do with protecting my reputation and guaranteeing my product.

It seems that the majority have now decided to have their knives back rather than auction them off for charity etc.
Obviously Brian will need payment sent to cover shipping and packaging costs, not sure how best to do that so you will need to contact Brian and make those arrangements !

Shipping costs were sent with the knife when I sent it in.

I'll probably still offer mine up for sale somehow and donate the proceeds to a charity of some sort. I'll figure that out later. I won't mind touching up the knife if it needs it anyway.

I don't see anything wrong with the makers wanting the knives back to sell or do with as they please. This is a hobby/fun thing for me right now so I'm not in the same boat as some of the others. Please don't have hard feelings over this. The whole thing was meant to be a fun learning experience and I know I've already had fun. (I may change my mind after I see how my knife did in the testing)

Let's not let this fun competition get a negative feeling about it.

Just my thoughts.

I slept on this...

I went back and re read the original post. I signed up for this for a few reasons; the challenge, this big knife took me out of my comfort zone of small knives and neckers. The camaraderie and fun of getting together with 10 other makers to test our skills AND the fact these knives would go on to help some one/organization through a raffle/donation whatever.

This was a pretty good bit of free advertising and I will be more than surprised if orders don't start to come in for these awesome 11 blades. Collectable...sure they are. I have been on the forums for awhile now and I don't ever recall hearing of something like this before(maybe once, but not to the extent of having the knives used and abused) quite the prestige in having Brian Andrews grade/test your knife and have it compared with some very good makers. The people buying these knives will know full well what they are getting as I am sure they will have been following this from the start.

Sorry to Pit and Brian if this has soured the theme of this challenge but I know I am not the only one thinking this and I felt I needed to say it. Thanks for all your hard work guys.

I know what I am doing with my knife when I get it back.

Take Care

Craig

True Craig,

Many of us won't shy away from a passaround knife. In fact, I'm still try to get my hands on Koyote's. Seeing 10 pages knife knife torture, reading opinions on it and seeing what a particular knife (not model), but a particular knife did gives me the warm and fuzzies. Does it have a few scratches and nicks? Perhaps, but so what. You've already seen its performance, chalk that performance towards future endeavors.

If I buy a new knife from a custom maker, I open it up, take it to the back and split something, baton it, make fuzzies, pry with the tip give it a little hell. Sometimes that puts scratches and dents in the blade. So what, its what I bought the knife for. Basically, I have to do my own testing before I'll start to trust the blade. Then again, if I buy a knife that has been rigorously tested for all to see, I can forgo all that. Personally, I like and prefer the users!

Damn Ken.... Had I known you were going to USE the knife... I may have decided against Aluminum...... but its so light on the hip. Oh well, you win some, you use some.

I'm gonna have Brian burry mine in the backyard.... saves on shipping.

Rick

Rick, a little off topic for this thread but can you tell me what you wrapped the upper part of your handle with? Did you soak it with epoxy or something? I really like the way that looks and have a couple of knife ideas I'd like to try something similar on.

Thanks,
SDS

I'm so mad about the way this thread has gone.

It seemed pretty clear to me when The Challenge Instructions included sending return postage that the intention was to return the knives to the makers.

As it should be.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about.

Come on guys. This isn't really that big of a deal. Nobody should be thinking one way or another about the makers who want their knives back.
Let's not let a good natured knife challenge turn into some stupid question of people's honor.

I'm so mad about the way this thread has gone.

Why Andy?..... we's just talkin. This is a good thread. There should be no judgements made.

From the beginning, it made no difference where the knives were going. Some folks were talking raffle but that's all it was... talk.

CKE2 admitted his post was off from the original intent of this contest. I totally respected his eagerness to help a cause... but didn't agree with him challanging other's morals. His second post cleared that up for me... its all good.

To not participate in a particular charitable event doesn't take character away from you. I will never auction a knife for charity. I don't donate money to charities either... I choose to donate my personal time and effort... I won't get into the politics of it... and shouldn't have to.

I make stuff and give it away all the time... though I rarely advertize it. I do my part... so I would have no problem asking for my knife back...

Rick

well said, Rick.

I think the makers ought to be able to do whatever they want with their knives. I don't remember agreeing to any conditions upfront (except to not leave Brian stuck with having to ship stuff back on his dime).

I don't have anything against anyone auctioning their own knife.

I've done it in the past too....just don't want to on this one.

Rick, +1

Andy- I'm kinda sorry I brought it up int he first place, but I wasn't terribly clear on what the overall ideas were.

Were this a military utility knife challenge, I'd be having it sent to some lonely deployed person who isn't getting much of a christmas. I honestly can't think of an actual charity I fully approve of myself. It's a camp knife. Hopefully, both pieces are still usable :D I honestly haven't figured out just what I am doing with it yet. It may yet end up being my camp knife. saves me the effort of trying to fit one for me in between orders :) But I might sell it as what it is- THE camp knife challenge knife.

Or I might even make it a passaround so KGD can buy it in 6 months, hahahaha

From this observers perspective it is a shame. When a few of us were knocking about ideas originally two of the key things I had in mind were a] test specifications – what exactly the trials were the competitors were going to compete at. b] what exactly was to become of all the test pieces established before hand – because once one defects all defect. No special pleading from anybody downstream about anything and no having to avoid the sucker's payoff.

I really hope this doesn't have a negative knock on discouraging any further events such as this. I was kinda hoping at some later point other makers would have come to see some great publicity opportunities from this first run in so many ways and wanted to submit to best 3”-4” personal or hackers & choppers 12”-14” evaluated or whatever.

Actually, a hitherto unvoiced part of me thought about some kind of win / win with Spark since he showed up here recently mentioning WSS patches and T-shirts. Maybe I was thinking too big, but I genuinely believed this might snowball into some great publicity and offer up a collective for a wider stage than can be got from immediate returns.

It should have been easy predict and avoid these discomforts. I still hope there is a next time. If there is let's all learn from this.

baldtaco- I hear ya. I apologize again for asking the question in an email.

I think everyone got very excited about the knives and I think it's a great contest. I'd love to participate in more. maybe this is just growing pains, learning how to do it.
