Just finished reading the camp knife challenge results. Looks like your camp knife was a real contender John(who had doubts though? :p )

The G wheatly didnt do as good as I suspected it would though, kind of a disappointment.

The other makers I didnt really give a shit about, what is everyone elses thoughts?

It was good stuff.

Congrats John, your blade hung right in there with the best of them. I was rooting for you and Koyote, and I had a feeling that whatever Rick put in there would do VERY well (my gut was right).

Personally I liked the look of Patrick Randall's knife (the one that doubles as a spatula :D). I knew it would be limited by it's design, and I don't think I would ever want to use something like it, but the aesthetics (perhaps lack there of) struck me.

Anyway congrats again John.

My first knife with you is on order and I haven't handled any of your knives, but if you knives are anything like your integrity I think I'll be buying lots of more knives off you

Fat chance of that. It was a good review but still one mans opinion. There has never been any question in my mind on who produces the most knife for the money. There were many good knives there but I am only buying one. My second choice would have been Koyotes entree.

Johns knife is tough as hell, Practical and a lot of knife for the money. The one point made was the sheath, I would like to see a retaining strap. When I don't have one, I add one. If I had a Indian name it would be " He who is upside down"

LOL. I must be your long lost brother: "Stumbles often". I like an overly secure sheath for the same reasons.

John, when you made your comment above, I assumed you were joking. That's a great design and it performed really well. I think Brian said as much. I gotta tell you that I'm trying to decide between your Camp knife and your Lobo for my next order from you. (I kinda like that anniversary knife too...). At the moment I'm hemorrhaging money (a fair amount on knives recently) and will have to wait, but I didn't find the review discouraging in the least.

If there were some points from the review you were concerned about, take 'em to heart and press on. You've made a lot of people happy with your knives, and grandchildren aside, what better a legacy can a man ask for?

Actually I was very pleased with the results. I was just worried others might not be. There were some "Big Dogs" in that contest, I`m glad I did as well as I did!

Congrats, John. Your knife definitely came across as an all-around top-notch contender. I wouldn't worry about the chopping score - if anyone doubts your ability to make a superb chopper, they need only take a few swings with a Hudson Bay.

I really enjoyed reading the review and checking out all of the knives.

John, if you were starting a camp knife from scratch, is there anything you would do differently after reading this review? That's not to say that there is any thing you should do differently, of course - the camp knife looks swell as-is. But any thoughts?

All the best,

- Mike

The only chore it didnt do superbly on was chopping, I dont use my knives to chop that much. Thats why Ive got a machete or hatchet.

I would have liked to seen more than one guy do the tests, that is the weak point of all of this to me. This only tells me what one person thought of many different knives, just picking up several different knives, one will tend to favor the feel, however everyone will think differently. But, if it suited the makers, that's what matters.

I think we were lucky to have someone as experienced and knowledgeable Brian as the tester...seemed thorough and objective. And when the test leaned more towards the subjective he pointed it out.

The logistics in getting a group of testers for something like this, all not getting paid a dime for their considerable donation of time, would be beyond terrible. We should be thankful that we got what we did.

I've got my Cowboy Camp Knife in my hand right now. I've looked it over thoroughly and eagerly await my second.

Well John, there's a reason I have 8, yes 8 of you knives. No other maker has my attention or money as much as you. I use your products more than my other ones. Some EVERY day! If yours are not as pretty or as perfect, I don't care. They are for using, not sitting around.

I think I would go back to some of my early designs, with a more "user friendly in all grips" handle shape, like one of these. I would stay with a 6" blade.

It would be hard in my mind to see why the Kephart would not be as good as it gets for a camp knife. I suppose for batoning, the straight back would excel. I am Anxious to try my Camp Knife out.

The competition was stiff. The chances of having the best knife is slim. I really dont think any knife maker put an inferior product out there. I think the idea of the competition was to see what characteristics make a good all around knife. It appears for an all around knife thin and sharp is hard to beat.

One of the reasons I bought my first Camp Knife was I really liked the grip shape it had. I'm ordering a second because I love the way the first one fits my hand. As a matter of fact, all of my knives larger than Firekit size have that handle, except for the EWOK.
I've been wanting to order a Roachbelly and it just hit me why I haven't. It's because it doesn't have the grip shape of the Camp Knife.
It's a winner to me.
