Camp Knife Design?

Here is what I came up with. It's shorter than I initially wanted to make it but to keep the weight I wanted, added some to the width. .25" thick spine, the tip is slightly tapered 1.75" back and it has a tapered tang... I did give it a bit of a drop point for tip control and the handle is replicated after a Busse design. I'll drill lanyard holes at the back of the handle and also just behind the plunge line in the lower end of the ricasso. I'm happy with it thus far and the customer is likewise. Being my first camp knife, seems like it's coming along well. Want to make more and really define a best design for myself.

Aldo 1084
Blade length 6.5"
OA length 11.5"
width 2 1/16" wide

Progress with a few others

Looking good bro, I like the fat one!

Thanks!

Big fat nasty lol. Think I'll call it the Rugarue!

rcetroy, I'm very partial to the forge finish. Think I'll be going that route with most of my knives. Also think that I will modify the back 2/3 of the tang on the larger one with the raised clip. Needs to have more of a sloping curve to it.

Applied the clay a day ago. Going to heat treat them on Friday. This is probably one of the more interesting parts for me. I love not knowing exactly what the Hamon will look like.

Thanks!

Excellent! The forge finish looks great! What kind of handle material are you going to use?

I'm leaning toward micarta, not sure what color though. Do you have any input? Needs to be durable

Pretty pumped on this one. I took everyone's input and incorporated something from everyone. Thanks guys!!!

I'm fairly new to this and I love the look to the forged look you are leaving with your blades. for the micarta a dark mixed with a slightly darker color I think would look awesome. Maybe a black layered with a grey just to go with that forge look. that's just my .02 lol hope I helped

I ordered Black with OD green Micarta. Think it is going to look great!

Shiva Ki put an edge on it for me and it is one of the sharpest knives I've ever handled. The edges that man puts on blades gives the knife a whole new persona. Never seen better, ever.

Looking good Cajun. I've been thinking of leaving the forged finish on a blade and was wondering, how will you handle the tang? Will you try to flatten it on the grinder? Seems like a fine line between flattening the tang and leaving the forged finish.

Those look really nice, are you going to grind in tapered tangs?

I clean them up to fit scales but like to leave the forge finish as much as possible if the any part of the tang is exposed at all after fit up, if no exposure go ahead and grind it clean for a sleek fit. When I do a para wrap I don't clean them up much, you can see in the pic below.

I received the micarta in the mail yesterday so I should have pics of the fit coming soon.

Timos, I hammer in all the tapers when forging. Just the way I prefer because it makes a lot less work for me when I get to the grinder. I'm still working on a 2x42

Here is one that has been complete. Still working the handle on the other.

And just finished HT on this on. 1084 Hamon right there.

I get the impression from reading the boards that a camp knife is a sort of Chefs knife on steroids. I really like my sharp short tramontina machete for camp use.

I am going to pair it with my newest knife next month
