camp/survival knife for $250 what should i get????

I was thinking that too, nodh (about the skookum shape). It looks like a neat blade, but I don't understand the price difference. I don't think I've ever read an account on here about the H1 though.

Ranger Knives-have them build what you want, if I had 250 laying around thats what I'd stick it in. Oh wait, I already did.
HAH!

medicalbroker@yahoo.comWhen making the same desision a few years back I did my homework and purchased a Fallkniven F1. I have never been sorry. the company recently changed their steel to a laminate and i am about to purchase another because of this change.

i can add one comment that others have not about the Fallkniven. In cold weather, the handle is much less cold that any other material i have ever held. This is a superb survival knife. If cuts well, penetrates well, chops well, and prys well. In a true survival sittuation, prying strength is often overlooked and many great blades simply snap. and then you have "no knife."

In addition, you need a thin blade knife as well for general cutting. You don;t need to spend a lot on this one. A nice folder or small fixed blade will do.

I hope youfind this helpful. Enjoy you outdoor world......

Doug

PS The CR knives are all wonderful. but cold steel in the winter is very cold on your hands.

If I wanted to use my Fallkniven A1 a lot, I would be very tempted to grind a shallow choil in the blade about 3/4 inch long. It would make the balance better for fine work and since I'm so used to knives with good sized choils I would be less likely to get into trouble if I moved my finger past the rubber guard. Other than that I like the A1 very much. I like the larger grip when compared to the S1.

ok for the cold handle i tend to bring gloves with me if its anytime near winter so for me its not a big prob.

antherthing packet knife for bush craft is that nessecery or is it just a good thing to do because i was thinking later down the road getting a sebenza from chris reeves if i like the shadow which i probibly will or if i read good reviews on it. and how would that piticular knife hold up as a workhorse knife? or is their any other good workehorse pocket knife?

my birth day is coming up and im also getting 250 for that also so im getting the shadow for sure now and with that 250

For $250 You could get a Bark River Bravo 1 & a smaller Bark River to "piggy back" on sheath or just to have a smaller Barkie. :) . Look into it man, highly recomended!! After my first Bark River purchase, I have truely turned to the "Bark Side".

Spend a little more and get a Busse or a Mission MP series. OH YEAH!!!

+1
If you stick with the cheaper handle barkies and increase you funds by $25 you can do this

Bravo 1 + mikro canadian II + kydex firesteel loop + fire steel = $275

Or get your choice of a bigger barkie say gameskeeper II + a good hatchet for $250.

I have a Reeve mountaineer II, but it has not been used since I got my barkies. I would recommend looking into a good trio also.

Another vote for the US-made Gerber LMF II - available at Academy Sports chains otc for $100. Back it up with a decent camp axe - I carried a US-made Plumb (Check Ace Hardware stores...) - and a Buck 110 (US-made) in your pack - just because - and you'll be 'good to go'. Lots of good answers for less than $250.

See if the person buying it for you will get you two or three knives adding up to $250. My top three choices would be Ranger RD6, Fallkniven S1, or Bark River Bravo 1. I dont feel that you lose any performance in these than what you would get for a $250 fixed blade. For that reason, I would try to get two knives out of it instead.

this is what im thinking i already said im getting the reeves shadow for x-mas and for my b-day im getting the bark river bravo 1 ($160) and the fallkniven a1 ($130 or so)

i couldnt find a fallkniven in stock anywhere with a low price can anyone link me to a web site with them in stock?????

For that much money, you can get a Bob Dozier semi-custom.

And Dozier knives are among the finest in the world. :):):)

I'd suggest the NWA BF knife. You'll have to get your name on the list and wait till May 2008 but it's a hell of a knife and nearly $100 less that what you have budgeted.

I second the NWA knife, it is just plain great. On the pic below it is the middle one. The other two would also suit your needs easily (SRKW Ratmandu and SYKCO Mutt CG), neither of them is currently available and the price depends on what you find on the exchange but they should be in your budget.

I also second the idea of NOT spending the whole budget on one single knife. Get one fixed blade between 4-6 inches, a folder (how about a spyderco, I love the mili) and a hatchet or saw.

If you are looking into the camp knife category you might want to consider the Camp Tramp, this knife is a legend and maybe (just maybe) you could get a user in that price class.

Good luck with your search.

You guys are kidding, right?:D For $250, you could get a very large number of guys to make you a custom knife to your specs in the size range that you are looking for. For example, why don't you clink the link and look at the two knifes on my home page. For $250, you could have had either of those and had some change left over if you didn't go wild on the sheath choice on the larger one. In my case, the "bad" news is you better like W2 or 1084 and natural handle materials:D
