Campaign Hats

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your posts. Really. I seemed like you were missing the light hearted intent of mine. Perhaps part of this is due to my not understanding what ^___^ and 0___0 mean. Any help?

I've heard of the old trick of tying the brim sides down with a bandanna, never seen it done.
I have over a dozen wide-brimmed hats of various styles, only a couple have brims that could be bent down like that without damage.
The only time I see that being any kind of issue whatever is if you only own one hat & you find yourself suddenly stuck in the middle of a blizzard somewhere.

Otherwise, just wear another type of hat if it's that cold. :)
No hat type is equally useful in all temps & all weathers.

My Montana peak/campaign hat is useful in bright sun, ventilated for hot weather, warm enough for temps down to the 30s for most reasonable periods of outdoor exposure, and I like the stiff brim on the "police" version that can shed quite a bit of water without getting floppy. That stiff brim is also perfect for 45 MPH speeds on the ATV where floppier brims drive me nuts.

For colder temperatures and longer exposures I have other "Fudd" types with fold-down ear flaps.
Just use whichever works best for whatever the conditions are.

That's just common sense. The thread is about campaign hats and I was merely suggesting a few options. If I'm out in extremely cold weather, I wear a fur lined mad bomber hat.

When I was a scout leader, we used to wear these for special events like jamborees and courts of honor. The local scout office would get used ones from the state police that they wanted to get rid of. I have one of wool felt and one of straw.

One of the most impressive things I ever saw was when we went to visit our nephew who was on summer camp staff at a scout reservation not too far from here. As we were leaving, a bus pulled up and some 30 scouts got off the bus in full summer uniforms, complete with campaign hats and white spats (I believe that's what they're called... they cover the tops of your shoes). They were the most well-dressed troop I had ever seen.

A few weeks ago we watched Moonrise Kingdom. As my wife got the DVD ready, I went and got my hat (because I know she secretly likes it. :))

I like the look, but I couldn't pull one off. I look better in a fedora (not the Indy ones, the Sinatra ones).
Y'all, for the love of humanity if you wear one of these remove the chin strap! It makes the wearer look a lot worse IMO.

The chin strap is one of the main features that makes mine what it is.
It'd blow off on the ATV if it wasn't either nailed down or strapped on, and I have enough holes in my head already. :)
In my case, I'm old enough to care more about function than looking cool.

1950's Norm Thompson Shikari beaver felt by Resistol. Ah likes it for canoing.

That's a very fine hat and a nice looking sidearm. Resistol makes a good hat.
