Has anyone done any handle replacement experiments yet? I'm thinking fossil mammoth ivory on my original. WW

Nope, not at this present time.

BTW, welcome to BF and the Camillus forum.

Waterwolf,
Keep in mind, if you just bought the raw fossilized ivory alone, you would have probally more than doulbe the cost of the knife, BEFORE somebody shaped them into scales.

Just my opinion, but the BK&T stuff is for USING, not show. But I sure would like a pic if you have it done! Good luck!

If you want to dress up a Campanion or any of the rest of the BK&T line, with a handle material that's prettier than that molded black industrial bomb-resistant stuff, at least make it something that can take a bit of impact. Ironwood, for instance, if you want a natural material. I wouldn't want to take a hard swing at firewood with anything that had a fossil ivory handle.

Mammoth Ivory can be obtained relatively cheaply from several sources in the Yukon. In my experience, you have to pick it over but its pretty solid stuff...at least on par with, if not better than, modern elephant ivory. I've been a sculptor for 30 years and carving a set of grips is something I can do myself without too much effort. Cutting the hexagonal sockets will be a chore but not particularly difficult. Anyway, its just an idea for a project (as if I don't have enough already)and may or may not happen.

Go for it - I want to see the picture too! I only wish I had your skills, I would like to do the same to my stripped Nimravus.

I bought myself on of those Companions after talking to Will Fennell on the phone. It didn't last very long.

A left-handed buddy of mine got his hands on it and had one of those "got-to-have-it" fits. So we made a deal and he went away jubilant. Guess I need to order another one.

Hi Waterwolf,

I live in Calgary & was just wondering if you would like to purchase any Camillus, Gerber, etc. knives for considerable discounts from the typical retail sources.

Write if interested.

BTW the mammoth ivory sounds intriguing - I dabble in primitive technologies a bit myself (bows, stone tools, atlatls) but cherish most ancient things.

I think the handle on my Campanion is way too thick. Thickest handle of all my knives. Would have loved to see it thinner. Will someday replace it, but that would mean going through the trouble of making a sheath. In my opinion, the perfect Campanion would have a 7 inch blade, and a handle that is not so bulky.
