If you don't want to spend a pile of cash and still want a great knife the new Steel Will Roamer series is fantastic. I have the Roamer 300 with a 6" D2 blade. They have smaller models too.

Why spend more money than you have to. This is the one I'm getting.

Justchilling,

Either the Bravo-1, or the Benchmade 162 will serve you well for your intended uses. I own both, use both and like both.

I have had a Bravo-1 for many years. The 162 is relatively new. Both are stellar knives.

To be honest, the 162 is really impressing me. Plus it won't rust in camp situations.

They are somewhat close in scope,

Either knife will serve you well as a camp or general purpose blade.

Weather Resistance can be handy in camp.

Another group of less pricy and yet stellar knives, is the Mora Line

The Kansbol is a great knife. As is the Bushcraft Black. Again, I own and use both as well as the Garberg. The Kansbol will slice your camp food the best of these three. Scandi edges work great in wood, but tend to wedge in food like potatoes and onions. They still get it done. Just not as deftly.

Consider a Kephart. They can be found across the price spectrum. The Kephart is a Plain Jane design but VERY GOOD design for a woods/camping knife.

The Condor is inexpensive and a great knife.

The L.T. Wright Next Gen is more expensive. It's heavier than the Condor. Between the too, I take the Condor with me more often.

Puukko, and similar knives also make great knives for woods/camping and can also be found across the price spectrum.

The Canadian Boat Knife design is another great all around knife from camping, to hunting, to survival. This one stays in my grab and go bag.

You really need to handle as many knives as you can to learn what truly works for you.

Just remember it should work first
I like that. :) Getting to try all the different knives is very difficult... so a lot of the time research, reviews and then buying is the only option you have. (unless you have a group of like minded people around you. A mora is definitely a 'must'. If you really really don't like it, you've 'lost' a couple of beers.

I love getting different knives to "try for size" and I inevitably have a pile of items that don't see any REAL use whatsoever - but I still keep the ones I like and let the others go... c'est la vie. I can't see any silver buller yet - but i tend to stay below the custom price band ;)

Good luck with whatever you decide.

:D

I say ESEE 4 or 6. They do have a camp/bushcraft line now. I've been going into the woods pretty much my entire life. I have never ever had to Batton wood. As far as shelter and camp clearing and fire duty I use a 12 OKC Machete. But for every thing else a 4" -6" blade is about all you really need. I prefer full flat grind 1095 as they are easy to sharpen even with a river rock. You may consider trying some condor stuff just to get an idea of what you like. The Kephart was OK for me. The steel isn't that great, so I am kinda looking for better one.
