Some friends and I are going camping at Huntington Reservoir here in Central Utah August 5th and 6th. You all are invited. We will be camping in a little hollow on the back side of the dam acrost from the parking lot. Friends and I have camped there twice before and rather liked it so we desided to camp there again. People are welcome to show up anytime Friday and leave when ever they want Saturday.

Meals are bring your own except for Saturday breakfast, which will be pancakes and fruit. If you want to help with food, let me know so I can tell you what we need. I'll be bringing a folding table, stove and some Cast Iron to cook on, that people are welcome to use. I'll have the fire going by 6pm in case people want to cook Tin Foil dinners or what have you. Along with dinner and lunch, people will need to bring their own drinking water because there is no running water close by, all we have is a rest room about 500 yards away.

I'll be heading up after I have Lunch to setup camp and play around before everyone gets there. If you have a 2 way radio I'll be on channel 4 sub channel 1. You can find maps and directions on Google Maps. Huntington Reservoir will come up in a search. Or if you email me with your zip or city and state I can send you a map.

I'll update this thread with more info if there is any and will post pics here after I get back.

Say, do you ever go camping in the Moab area? This Spring I drove through there are was pretty impressed - might want to spend a little more time there.

I went to Moab in College. Was only there for the night then had to come home, but what I saw of it was cool. Would love to go back when I have a few days.

I just blew through there in a hurry heading back to MN from AZ, but the whole town seemed dedicated to mountain bikes, 4-wheelers and jeeps. The 60-mile views in that part of the country really give me pause.

Hope the weather was nice for you...I'm heading out tomorrow to camp in Wisconsin. Too bad I couldn't join you in Utah!

The area is definantly dedicated to Recreation. Let me know the next time you plan on being in the area. Maybe we can try to hook up for an outdoor adventure.

Bric, the trip was really nice! Friday evening before my friends showed up I was watching some storm clouds to the east. The setting sun was reflecting off of them making them glow orangish red. Then that evening/night we got to see lightning from the same area of the sky. But the Skys above us were perfect both Friday and Saturday.

Yesterday I got home from the campout around 11:45am. I typed this email to some friends about an hour later. Instead of retyping the whole thing, I figured I would copy and paste it unedited.

I got home from the campout about 1:15 minutes ago. It was a blast!! The 1st group to come down was 2 hours late (should have arived around 6:15, but got to the Reservoir around 8:20). The second group was a little earlier then I expected, they showed up around 8:55pm. We left Mount Pleasant on our way to Fairview at 9:36am and got to Huntington Reservoir at about 10:14am. That was with a few minute stop above Electric lake (5 minutes from Huntington) to take pictures.

The camp spot we used is about 600 yards from the parking lot. Takes about 5 to 8 minutes to walk it. Maybe took me 20 minutes for the 2 loads. Mom stuck around till I got the second load then she left me there. Once the loads were at camp I found a spot for my tent, set it up then proceeded to improve the old fire ring and gather wood. Did that till sometime after 11. Then I had lunch then went hiking.

I started my hike by going above the camp site (this isn't an official campsite, just a cool place some friends and I found 3 years ago) to a very pretty meadow. From there I hiked about half way around the hill behind the reservoir. Then I headed back to camp, explored the meadow a little more and then headed around the Reservoir. It's at least a 4 to 5 mike hike around the Reservoir and parts of the trail are hard to follow and some parts were covered in trees. The first trail I took behind the hill was a sheep/cattle trail. The second trail is one that someone made many years ago to get to cool spots on the back side of the res. The trail on the road side is a 4-wheeler trail so it was easy to follow. I carried my SOG Seal Revolver on the first trail. When I got back to camp I switched it out for my SK5 Tiger Shark. There were lots of Thistles along the trails that I beheaded and I figured that the extra reach of the Tigershark would be a good thing.

The Tigershark was useful for cutting back tree limbs that were to low to the trail and some brush. I even used it to limb a few green dead pine trees. After one of the pine branches sliced up a nucle on my right hand pretty bad I desided that my 16.5" WWII Khukri and gloves were in order. At that point in the trail near the west side of the Reservoir there were 9 to 12 downed small pines that I needed to clear to get through the trail. I had started the limbing with the Tigershark, got cut then switched to the Khukri. Had to cut through 4 of them to clear enough trail to get through. I climbed over the rest because I didn't want to wear my self out to fast.

Lunch was 30 minutes or so before the major trail clearing excitement. There is a spot half way up the back side of the Reservoir where I camped as a Scout. You either have to hike in or boat in to it. I had lunch in a grove of trees (half a dozzen) close by over looking the Reservoir. Lunch was Gluten Free ramon, Jerky and some candy. Instead of using my drinking water to make the noodles, I used Lake water. I got some as clean as I could then boiled it for 3minutes before adding the noodles, then the noodles boiled for 3 minutes. I also made my next meal with Lake water and some tea. Each time making sure to bring the water to a rolling boil for a few minutes before using. No problems today. :-)

2 of the guys that came only brought blankets or 50 degree sleeping bags so they only got a few hours of sleep before having to get up and spend the rest of the night tending the fire. Poor Guys. They were good sports about it in the morning. We are thinking of going back up Spring City canyon in a the next month or two. The two guys that had the cold night are up for it, with the right gear of course. LOL!!

Years ago I used to be able to sleep on a slant. These days I have a hard time doing it. I was warm all night but only got 5 to 6 hours of sleep instead of 8. I'm guesing it was the slant, part of it was also my back and the other part the guys in camp tending fire from 3am till 8am. LOL!! More Chiropractic visits and more camping should cure this problem.
