Camping cookware "bail handle" question

Nice setup Pinnah . And +1 for being a good Dad and using what your kids give you

I hear what your saying about trying to not leave a footprint and I always try not to impact the land more than needed . But too be honest , except for during hunting season , I could walk the mountains here for weeks and never see anyone . I also have a titanium Emberlit stove and I do use that rather than make a fire quite often . Just something about making tea with a pot hung over the open fire though lol .

And yeah the titanium cookware is expensive and that anodized aluminum is supposed to be just as good . But as I said the cookware I have now , I bought about 35 years ago . It's not like I've bought a new set every 3 years trying out different things . So I don't feel bad about spending the money on something I'll like and use , right ? Once it arrives I'll do a little review and post it up here .

Taldesta you getting this snow too ? I'm East of Ottawa a bit and it's snowing sideways here and they're saying 15cm (that's 6 inches for our friends South) . So looks like I'll be out with the snowblower tomorrow

My old 3 pot nesting set most certainly came from Canadian Tire all those years ago . It's a good old set as all 3 pots have bail handles and lids and all the lids have fold out handles making them usable as a fry pan . Plus everything nests inside the largest pot which is 7" diameter by 6 1/2" tall with it's lid on it . I do have one of those aluminum handles to grab the pots with too .

What the titanium pot will be replacing is actually just the smallest nesting pot which seems to have pretty much the exact same measurements as the TOAKS 1300ml pot and is the one in the photo and the one that's always in my small pack .

Neenan, you put the 'home' in camping with this great kettle. Other than surviving, aren't we mostly trying to re-create the basics of comfort and safety of home in the woods/bush/wilderness? I know mostly I like to stay fed, dry and warm even when I seek my most distant outdoor sites. Especially warm (ok - is was minus 24c here last night, so please excuse this emphasis ...)

On topic ... may I say that I rarely go to town without attending to my local Canadian Tire store camping section. Brand new to me today! and on topic is a new offering of a Broadstone camp cookset, coated aluminum, one with bail (referred to as a wire-smart handle [bail]). CDN $129.99 plus HST 13%. I will upload acquired pic to post shortly.

Not for me. My aged, sooty, plain aluminum, 3 pot cookset will more than suffice. But, you know, I like to window shop the newest and I like to compare the pros and cons and come to a practical comparison - for me.

I started looking at Titanium because of the supposed health risk associated with the use of bare Aluminum cookware . However I'm not in the woods camping most of the time .

Hmm ............. maybe sticking with my old set is the way to go . Any more input anyone ?

You can easily fabricate a bail for a pot that lacks one, so long as the pot has a rim. There are several very good videos on YouTube about how to do this (usually for Snow Peak titanium pots).

Marcclarke , you're right and I could have gone that way . Truth is I was being pretty picky about this new pot setup as my old aluminum one was and is still serviceable . The new set should be in this week and I'll post pics once I get it .

By the way , I looked up Loveland , CO to see if was a real place (and it is) . What a nice place to say you live , Loveland .

I used the wire leaders and snap swivels I had from northern pike fishing to make handles for my old cooking gear.--KV

toaks makes titanium pots with bails. Plus the bails are removable. FYI

I would get a Toaks 1300 with bail, 750 ml with bail and a small fry pan and be done with it. i have never found the perfect kit

This ^. Toaks makes surprisingly good quality titanium products for really reasonable prices compared to the competition from what I've seen. I have the 450ml mug and the 750ml pot w/bail - the one nests inside the other perfectly, and is a great little solo kit. And, as panzertroop said, the bail on the pot is easily removable when you don't want it. Problem solved.

Search "four dog stove". That person sells the Snow Peak pots with an added bail handle and his own bush cooker stove.

Just another option similar to those by Toaks. I'm not sure, but it seems like someone above referenced that site's bush pot.

Woods Walker that's exactly what I just bought . I ended up buying a TOAKS 1300ml pot with the bail handle and the matching sized pan was just $17.50 . So I'll have the pot with it's lid and bail handle and a pan the right size for the pot to nest into . It should make a great kit .

Sounds great. I will probably go with the 1600 ml as occasionally travel with groups and need a larger cook pot. I like to pack a GSI BPA free plastic cup. Really nice to drink hot liquids without burning my lips.

I don't see where switching to Ti pots will be of any great benefit. If my aluminum stuff worked well for 35 years, why switch?

Mannlincher consider who you're talking to here . Don't we all buy new knives when the ones we have still cut ? lol

Woodswalker those little cups are great . I have a brown one and a yellow one inside the pot in my pack all the time .

And I asked myself that same question Barbarossa , why doesn't TOAKS offer the pot and matching pan as a kit
Although their price is pretty good , so you can buy both pieces and make up the kit you like . Mine might show up here any day now and I'll post some pics .

This thread has inspired me to order some aluminum rod and add a bail to my MSR Titan 2-liter pot. I'm looking at getting some high-temp silicone tubing to put over the middle. I'll post pics when I get it done.

Almost forgot. Mike let us know if the bail attachment points gets in the way of the pan/lid. I just purchased the 1600ml Pan cuz my old Ti fry pan is MIA. Puts a big damper on my camp stove bannock so for 20 bucks what the heck. If there are no issues with the lid/bail attachment then will buy the pot as well next month. I am on a monthly gear allowance. :(

Thanks.

Kevin.

Woods Walker I'll post for sure as soon as they arrive . I'm hoping the pan will work as a lid for the pot . But either way I'm sure it will at least be the right size that the pot will sit in it so they can nest together in my backpack and that makes it work just a well because I could have the pot going with it's original lid and be using the pan at the same time .

Panzertroop what size set did you buy ?

1300, 750 and the fry pan lid. All fits in the 1300 stuff sack. I love the removable bails. Good stuff
