howdy all.................i'm looking for a reasonable priced fixed blade for outdoor use. any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Do you want a big chopper or a smaller general pupose knife?
I love my Greco Companion. Smaller 5" blade.
KaBar USMC is hard to beat for the price.
Becker, Swamprat, RKAT.

Blue man,

Custom or prodution, for custom Gene Ingram builds a reasonable priced, great users in the #1 or the #7 my personal favorite, which has seen 3 years of camp duty and still going strong.

Unless you plan on heavy chopping (use an ax), One of the Mora fixed blades is an excellent, very inexpensive knife.

Marbles makes some good, carbon steel bladed, knives that also look great.

Hoplofile's suggests some great blades and I'm sure plenty will be along with good suggestions.

In addition to letting us know what size and main tasks you have in mind for it, also give us a price range to work with.

Bests,
Amos

There's a range of options here, but it really depends on how you foresee yourself using the knife.

I sort of break them into categories like:

4-6" blades. Utility knives that work well for most camp chores unless you're talking about some serious chopping.

6-8" blades. Medium length knives that can go both ways. Utility work or chopper.

8" and up. Dedicated choppers that can be pressed into service for other duties.

I tend toward one each from the first and last category. Smaller blade for the little stuff and game prep if needed. Bigger blade for chopping and firewood splitting. Right now, my pack has Swamp Rats in it... a Howling Rat Little Mischief and a Rat Mastiff.

If you can give us a size range, more folks will chime in with suggestions, I'll bet.

If you're looking for a ~4" knife I'll put in a recommendation for the Queen #92, a 4.5" D2 blade, full tang, with carved stag bone handle for $38 + ship (here, second from top on left.) And no, I'm no associated with this site, other than as a customer). Best value I've found in a while.

Edited to add: The sheaths are a little dodgy, though, as they do not have a strap to secure the knife in the sheath.

Check out Bark River Knife and Tool, they have a wide range of fixed bades and are priced pretty reasonably. Also, take a look at the Grohmann/DH Russell line. They have been popular for many years as camping/survival knives.

The pattern of that Queen is a good pattern with a strong history in a number of makers serving outdoors men and women well. One of these days I'm gonna add one or two of those D2 Bone Stags to the herd.

When I was a kid every one carried a Case little finn or the Ka-bar equivelent and a hatchet. It did things very well.

I have a SRKW Howling Rat that works for me - consider a RAT-3 or RAT-5 in 1095. BRKT has some nice GP and chore-specific blades in A2 and stainless, the Queen premium Hunter and Light hunter series are D2 and cheap - though, my experience has been they require some reprofiling. Good luck on your "hunt."

This is really the most important thing. How do YOU see YOURSELF using the knife, and what are you comfortable with.

I tend toward one each from the first and last category. Smaller blade for the little stuff and game prep if needed. Bigger blade for chopping and firewood splitting. Right now, my pack has Swamp Rats in it... a Howling Rat Little Mischief and a Rat Mastiff.

I tend toward the other direction. I rarely use anything larger that a 4" utility knife (usually a Mora 510) and a axe/hatchet for chopping. However many here find the larger choppers to be more versatile.

I really think it comes down to personal preference. My "go to knife" is a Fallkniven F1. Never let me down.

Edited to add: Go to this sub forum and do a search for "utility knife" or "or outdoor knife". You're going to get the phone book, but there will be a wealth of info for you to look through.
