Hey guys,

I'm looking for a camping/survival knife. Somewhere in the range from 5-7 inch blade for around 100 bucks. I've been looking at the Gerber LMF II which looks pretty sweet but I'd like some more good options. I really like the Bark River knives but there pretty pricey

Thanks all,

Evan

Yeah the Gerber looks pretty sweet but that's about all.

Personally I only own one Gerber anymore and its a Paul 1st edition, which I'll be selling soon.

If you want a good knife with a screaming warranty listen to Mori and check out an ESEE, maybe the 5 would do for ya..

Or I'd go with a Cold Steel SRK if you can get the Carbon V (which is harder to find anymore and is NLA) or the Aus8

ESEE 4, 5 or 6

Becker BK-7

Scrapyard Scrapper 5
Scrapyard Scrapper 6
Scrapyard Regulator

Swamprat Ratmandu

Well under $100 is the Mora Bushcrafter knives. Not the prettiest, but very functional.

ESEE 5 or 6
Becker BK2 or BK7
a Leuku style blade (especially paired with a smaller scandi style companion blade)
Buck has several - like the 119 special or the Alpha series
Ontario SP17 quartermaster (or even better, the FF17)
Short Kabar
Ontario/Ranger RD6
Cold Steel SRK or Recon Scout

I really like the Rat 5, but it's really thick.. is that going to hurt its edge retention? is it worth it over the 6?

it won't hurt edge retention. it will have a more obtuse edge, and probably help edge retention.

for camping stuff, i think .25" is too thick. i prefer something thinner, especially for food prep.

i would get the 6.

Seal,

from what I've heard people rave about the ESEE4 as their all time favorite go to knife, although I personally don't have one I'm sure I will someday.. It maybe a little smaller blade then you're looking for..

I don't think it will hurt its edge retention, though thicker blades don't slice food very well.. My SRK is a beast 6" blade performs very well but again is really thick and doesn't handle slicing tasks as well as a thinner blade..

I convex all my blades so it helps with edge retention..

EDIT: also if you're looking at the Ontario/Rat knives I don't believe they have the same warranty, unless its an RC 5 or ESEE 5, ESEE is the new name..

Do not recommend the AG Russell Field Knife 2. Very poor quality. The one I received had a crooked blade that was not seated into the bolster, you could slide a piece of paper up to the tang. It looks real good in the pictures.

ESEE RC4 or RC6. Flat grind, 1/8" thick, good steel, great camp/outdoor knife.

Fallkniven S1 - a little over your price range at ~$130 but it's a great knife...

5" blade / ~10" OAL / 0.20" thick at spine / weight is just under 7 oz. / VG10 SS @ 59 HRC / full tang / lanyard hole / thermorun grip / zytel sheath / tang proturdes at pommel for bashing/hammering

Good luck in your search... enjoy the adventure! :D

okay so I'm thinking I'm going to go with the RC 6, but should I get it with the sharpened clip point? and should I get the serrated version?

RC6 Great choice. I have the blade and love it. It is by far my favorite knife of the entire ESEE line and for a camp knife, I chose this over the RC4. The extra blade length is great for splitting larger logs. Get the plain edge and the original drop point blade style and never look back. Splits like a mofo as nutnfancy would say :D

+1 on the Fallkniven S1 if you can swing the extra readies.

i'd also suggest a simple Mora Clipper 840/860 or a Triflex Bushcrafter. they are excellent knives at a very, VERY attractive price point.
