camping fixed blade

I'd say fallkniven f1 for a camping knife.
I'm posting another f1 review of field usage in Sweden on my youtube channel tomorrow. Oh and if you want to see killer sheaths, check out the sheath that comes with that one (made by martin swinkels)
Having used both rats and fallknivens, my preference goes to the f1 (even though it's sub 5 inch)

for a survival knife, you might want to go a little larger indeed. Loads of good sugesstions in this thread.

Seal Pup: Stainless Steel = less concerns with food prep & handier size

RC6: Larger size means greater mass when splitting wood or prying. 1095 steel means ease or sharpening but a little more maintenance.

I find the SEAL Pup Elite a friendlier design for car camping and backpacking but can say nothing negative about the RC6. Great product and even greater company. Ultimately, its what feels good to you that counts.

Thanks for the info Ive had a seal pup for a few years and have been happy with it I just wanted to get opinions on the 6 before picking one up.

Nice! I bought an F1 a short while back to see what all the hype is about. I bought a VG-10/kydex after reading and considering the various trade-offs and the prices. It's a very, very impressive knife. Solid as a brick, great cutter. The only caveat is that you probably want to consider how you feel about sharpening convex edges. It isn't hard but it was a new thing for me.

Here's another nomination. For <$50, you can get a Buck 102 or 105. These are very handy, very light, well-designed blades that get overlooked because they're "only" 420HC, but Paul Bos is in charge of the heat-treat and that 420HC performs better than a lot of other companies' "better" steels.

Lots of great choices here. I currently use:

BRKT Bravo-1
ESEE RC-4
Fallkniven F1 (want an S1 really bad)
Buck 119 Special - have used this knife for over 20 years for hunting, camping, etc. Its still performs well and takes a really nice edge.

If you are looking at Bark River, you're over that $100 limit. As far as the Bravo is concerned, I prefer the knife it was based on - the Gameskeeper. Of course, there is always their Boone, like my Bocote handled one. Both have CS blades - and make great bushcraft knives.

That Gameskeeper - at .215" - is stout. Still, that Buck 119 is a hard act to follow.

ESEE's no questions asked warranty is unbeatable. Their blades are pure awesomeness. You should get the ESEE 6. I just got it and its freaking sick! Its also a do-it-all knife. But then again, if you get the bravo 1 i wouldn't blame you. That's a beautiful knife too. I just got the ESEE 6 first cuz it was calling out to me.

Is the Al Mar SERE Operator S (S30V) 5-inch fixed blade suitable for camp use ?

I know this knife might be above the OP's budget, but the ergonomics of its handle and lightness (around 6 oz) left a good impression on me who has yet to own a fixed blade.

My only RAT/ESEE knife is my RC-5, seen below with a KaBar, a Gerber LMFII, and a Buck 650 Nighthawk. The RC-5, even at nearly a pound, is the best choice - it's .25" CS blade is simply awesome. I'd rate the KaBar and Nighthawk next, with the LMFII a distant fourth (It was a gift - and I don't like serrations.).

Totally. The RC6 is awesome

Cant decide between the 4 abd the 6 for my all purpose camp and backpacker. It looks like the handle is a little short on the 4. just wanted to know waht everyone thought of these two blades.

The 6 is AWESOME! I was initially concerned about the extra length, but what a great blade... This thing is not cumbersome, its lighter than the ESEE-5 and will baton wood and handle larger camping/survival chores better than the ESEE-4. Don't get me wrong, get both if you can, but this is one guy that loves the utility of the 6..

It has been said in this forum that the ESEE-6 gets "smaller" with use. I would have to agree as I also find myself using this knife for just about anything and everything. A word on the LMF 2 by Gerber.. I bought one a few months ago despite all the internet hype. Needless to say I returned it within a week as the plastic around the base of the blade broke under some light batoning...great idea, weak design

On more word on the ESEE-6, it does have the finger choil which allows you to choke up and makes the blade look and feel much smaller. Cutting edge only 5.75"!!! 6 All the WAY!

Does anyone know if the 6 still comes with the MOLLE locks. I read somewhere that they were going to start shipping with the clip plate instead of the locks? Also is there a kydex sheath for the 6 similar to sheath for the 5 from esee or will it need to be custom made.

Thanks for the info, I used to have one of the gerber LMF and did not like it at all. Just joined the forum and Im very impressed with the amount of knowledge and help that is on here. Im just trying to decide which one to get the 6 is def in the front, it looks like a great knife that will last for years to come. was also wandering if you know what type of carry system comes with the 6 currently.

Thanks Again.

I recently got a RC4 and RC6. The RC6 came with a sheath also, but it's a hard plasticky feel rather then the kydex feel like the RC4. Both model are great for camping/backpacking purpose.

I was torn between RC5 and RC6, so I ordered the RC5 and and RC6. I returned the RC5 after compared with RC6. RC6 feel much lighter than the RC5, but the weight is very manageable. If you planing to use for bpacking, the RC6 will save you lots of weight and still does the job equal or more then the RC5. To me RC5 is more for military purpose.
