Camping folder?

Went on a weekend camping trip in the NC mountains this past weekend. I have 3 new Spydercos, Manix 2 Cruwear-Para 2-Sage, but was reluctant to carry one since it has been a while since I have camped and didn't want to screw up and lose one of my new knives. Opted to carry my Mini-Grip instead which was a little inadequate. Thinking that the longer blade Endura would fit the bill, especially with helping my girlfriend with food prep. Any other model from your experience I should consider before I order the Endura?

Military. The Junior would make a good one too IMO. Although CRUWEAR is not a rust monster, keep in mind it is not a SS. With that in mind my CRUWEAR Military would still be one of my top choices.

Depending on where you are camping and how much exposure to the elements there will be, a Pacific Salt could be a good choice. It is essentially a completely rust proof Endura with H1 steel.

Was just on the Spyderco website and the Pacific Salt did catch my eye. How hard is H1 to sharpen and keep an edge? Like the longer blade length so may be a good choice.

My Cruwear is scary sharp. Trying to find the longest blade without going too long, if that makes sense.

Edge retention on the plain edge h1 is mediocre. On a positive note, it is very easy to sharpen and takes an insanely sharp edge. Serrated h1 on the other hand has some of the best edge retention of any steel Spyderco uses. This has to do with how the steel is hardened during the grinding process. The serrated version comes out much harder than its plain edged counterpart.

Endura is a great slicer and I'd have no worries about taking it camping.

But, given the option, I'd step up to the Pacific Salt.

Edge retention is relative. It's certainly good enough to get through a whole meal's prep and then some. ;)

Your standard PM2 or Cruwear Manix should handle camping just perfectly. I like the extra blade length and open back design of the Military for food prep and easy cleaning. Do you really need super corrosion resistance for camping? If not, and if you can avoid having your knife soaking wet for hours at a time, then S30V should cope well.

Get a Stretch. Pretty sweet blade and better for food Prep. I own the Pacific Salt and stretch. I guess it would be a toss up other than I got the stretch in ZDP189 so that definitely has better edge retention. As far as S30V from Spyderco, I don't like it. Every time I look at my Para2 it as a chip in it. I just don't like that steel. They did a great job with the S35VN on the New Natives, though.

Gayle Bradley or Resilience .
The Resilience is a fantastic cheap camp knife , its a big useful folder , for camp tasks and when food prep and general hard cutting is required it excels .

Guess I am wanting another with a longer blade. Looks like I'll be ordering the Pacific Salt or the Endura. Knowing me, maybe both. Like the size since they are close to the same length blade.

Get the Pacific Salt now and wait and snag the sprint run hap40 endura when it comes out.

This ^^^. I have a bunch of Spyderco knives and bought the Resilience for camping in the tropics. It does very well in the sea. Just rinse and dry. I usually carry it with a Rock Salt that I don't have to do anything to.

My Endura is, hands down, the best food prep folder i have. I haven't had any rust issues with VG-10, but in my neck of the woods I don't really have problems with anything rusting, so YMMV. In addition to the excellent grind for food prep, it's also available in an assortment of obnoxiously bright and difficult to lose colors. Mine's blaze orange and has always been easy to find no matter where I've set it down. It's light and the FRN is very grippy.

If you want G10 and a long blade, I can say from experience that the Manix 2 XL also works great in the outdoorsy, camping, food prep role. It's not quite as good with food prep as the Endura, but it's still pretty good. I've been wanting to try a Police in G10 for this role as well, but I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet.

Since my Pacific Salt is SE, I can't really comment on the plain edge version. Mine lives in my weak side pocket when I'm hunting, fishing, etc. and only gets used for things like cutting rope and fishing line. It also makes a decent bread knife, though it's a little short on blade length for that.

Like you I don't like to carry my nice Spydies in the mountains. Often I'll carry a Byrd Cara Cara for food prep and a DMT diafold (coarse/fine) to keep it sharp. Years ago I carried an Endura on a trip in the Smokies and afterward noticed some light rust/tarnish around the Spydie hole. As you know, it can be very humid in those mountains.

Manix 2 XL. It is a big strong knife that in my opinion is great for around camp. It is as big as some small fixed knives and has a proven locking system.
