Edge retention on the plain edge h1 is mediocre. On a positive note, it is very easy to sharpen and takes an insanely sharp edge. Serrated h1 on the other hand has some of the best edge retention of any steel Spyderco uses. This has to do with how the steel is hardened during the grinding process. The serrated version comes out much harder than its plain edged counterpart.
For those reasons you just stated SURF is why I've been trying to get Spyderco to consider their original FB05 Temperance 1 model to be reintroduced in H-1 and to also have it in SE & PE both>> to me I think that would be the absolute perfect camping, hunting, fishing fixed blade. I still use my original VG-10 Temperance 1 models ( SE & PE) several times a week for all kinds of serious cutting chores and have excellent luck with them. To me it's the quintescential Spyderco hard use fixed blade. Most people don't know what they had when they owned them at one point.
I also agree with you that you can't go wrong with almost anything out of the H-1 Salt Series. One more point>> I'm wondering how performance ranks with the new nitrogen based steel that Spyderco is now using and I'm referring to the LC200N that they are using on the TUSK model. I'm wondering if that might be a better selection than H-1?
