Camping folder?

Edge retention on the plain edge h1 is mediocre. On a positive note, it is very easy to sharpen and takes an insanely sharp edge. Serrated h1 on the other hand has some of the best edge retention of any steel Spyderco uses. This has to do with how the steel is hardened during the grinding process. The serrated version comes out much harder than its plain edged counterpart.

For those reasons you just stated SURF is why I've been trying to get Spyderco to consider their original FB05 Temperance 1 model to be reintroduced in H-1 and to also have it in SE & PE both>> to me I think that would be the absolute perfect camping, hunting, fishing fixed blade. I still use my original VG-10 Temperance 1 models ( SE & PE) several times a week for all kinds of serious cutting chores and have excellent luck with them. To me it's the quintescential Spyderco hard use fixed blade. Most people don't know what they had when they owned them at one point.

I also agree with you that you can't go wrong with almost anything out of the H-1 Salt Series. One more point>> I'm wondering how performance ranks with the new nitrogen based steel that Spyderco is now using and I'm referring to the LC200N that they are using on the TUSK model. I'm wondering if that might be a better selection than H-1?

I suggest and use a Spyderco Military as my camp folder. It works great for everything from cleaning fish to cutting watermelon. The 4 inch blade really comes in handy especially when preparing chow....

Don't own one but the Tatanka would probably make a good folding camp knife.

I usually take my Manix 2 LW. Use it for food prep and cutting tasks, rougher tasks I use a mora or a hatchet. I prefer the LW because we do alot of day hiking when camping and its... well... light weight.

I do a lot of camping, well ok, RVing, anyway I would agree with most all the post here. I'm about to go on a 4 day trip next week, and I'm sure I will take my Manix XL and an Endura. I have a Brushcraft BOB from Tops Knives for any heavy duty task. It depends on the task you need the knife to do. I bought the Tops after trying to use the Manix XL to baton some fire wood, the lock failed repeatedly. I was shocked even though I understand batoning a folder is not a realistic task. The good news is even after the hard use the steel held up great and the edge did not roll.
The Manix and endura will be just used as general food prep and something to have in my pocket, fishing etc. But, both great choices, along with the Military for a camping GP knife.
