My two boys told me they wanted to camp out in the backyard tonight. So we put up the tent, started a fire with the fatwood and the fire steel.Once we got the fire going i let them pratice starting a fire with the firesteel. They used PJCB and dryer lint.We are boiling water right now for some pine neddle tea and off to the tent for the night. My boys are 8 and 6. The 4 year old want to sleep inside with mommy. My oldest got to use his new mini buck knife to make fatwood shaving for the first time tonight. He was so excited.

Awesome! Backyard camping can be really run. We just got a fire pit "pan" from a friend that I need to figure out a base for to do some of the exact things you're doing.

Time with family....priceless!!

Glad to see you passing along the Bushcrafter way to the kids
I'm planning a trip for the Twins here shortley.

Great to see that your boys are interested in the outdoors

I remember back when I first slept outside in a tent. I caught my pants on fire. Good times.

Great memories your building there! Sounds like a blast.

My daughter (age 3) and I have been having backyard camping and fire sessions when weather permits, in preparation for going farther afield this summer. Good times!

Some people laugh because it's not "hardcore", but backyard camping is great. It gets you out of the house, you get to practice all kinds of skills and build some of those "forever" memories. All with virtually none of the danger of "hardcore" camping.

Backyard camping is great. I spent MANY a summer night in the tent in the backyard. I can't wait to do it with my son. I have been getting him out for fires and hot chocolate this past winter but I am really looking forward to camping with him this summer:thumbup:

Awesome memories you are making there.

Thats excellent!!! I am sure they had a great time.

I have seen more animals(skunk, racoons, Possum, Deer, Turkey, and Coyotes in my back yard than in the woods..... Backyard camping by me would be a lil spooky to say the least.:D

It went great. They didn't care much for the pine needle tea,but then again it wouldn't be something I would drink all the time either. They stayed up late and where typical disgusting little boys. With all there bodily noises if you know what i mean. They finally went to sleep, then this morning we started the fire back up and just hung out till the sun came up.Sorry no pics this time I didn't even think about it.Next time i'll take pics. They say they want to sleep out there again tonight. Will see.Maybe tonight we will boil some water for hot chocolate. Now that sounds good with some marshmallows.Overall we had a great time.:thumbup:
