so i want to make a wicked little hatchet for my brother in law as he spends alot of time outdoors in the woods doign various things. I have a few choices in metals and the ability to heat treat them in a variety of fashions. my choices are 52100, 5160, W2, 1084. I was personaly leaning to 52100 as i think it has a bit more toughness to it. I will be forging the thing from hand and it will have a metal shaft as well. convex grind and around a 1/4 inch think sound about right? thanks for your input

I would go with the 5160, and a full quench. Temper at 550-600F for a mid 50s Rc.
Second choice would be 1084 with just the edge quenched. Use the same temper temps for an upper 50s Rc.
