I am working on putting together a camping trip for my fraternity. I am pretty excited as people were actually interested. I usually have no one to go with. This is going to be awesome. I am going to try and work in some survival skills, but I dont know how interested they would be.

Anyways, I have about 15-20 guys going, who have mostly limited or no camping experience. Me, along with one other guy, are the only ones that have been a lot. Anyone know any good places around Eastern PA?? So far, I have looked into the Delware Water Gap Recreational Area (about an hour from us) and the Catskills (about 2 hours). Surprisingly, there isnt a whole lot of state parks that have camping in the poconos that I have found. Anyway, any suggestions of places to go would be great. We also plan to do some fishing. We plan to go in April when its a little warmer.

Its going to be a lot of hard work to get these guys prepared and get them the right gear for the job, but it should be fun.

What is the expected length of the trip? Are you all planning to mostly car camp? Or is there a hike of moderate length/long?

If you're going very 'deep in', I'd be hesitant to take that many new folks in on my own (or with only one other guy).

If it's a shorter, simpler trip close to the car, I'd at least be sure to pack a lot of extra first aid gear!

The Promised Land State Park was nice when I was there more than a few moons ago.
Not too far from the Gap.

some guys are kinda lazy, i think we wouldnt be car camping, and maybe just hiking in a mile or two. We would be going for a weekend.

andrew,

jenny jump in hope, nj may be one to look it. it's off exit 12 of I-80 so not too far away from delaware water gap. i've gone there twice with groups of coworkers...some with little camping experience. they have a 40-person group site ($40/night) which is what i've reserved even though it's only ever been six of us each time so far. it's at the end of a road so you're kinda out by yourself and we've never been bothered about drinking which is officially not allowed....you have a bigger group though. it's a decent place to pitch some tents and hang out by a campfire.

Morph's plan sounds best to me, Andrew. Frat-boys in the backwoods, goofing around, can cause injuries. If you or your other experienced friend don't know first-aid and emergency care, then hiking two miles back out for help may be difficult, especially at night in uncertain terrain.

You have a big "caretaker" job on your hands since they aren't experienced. Break them (and yourself) in easy, by going with the 40pp Jenny Jump site. See how it works, how everyone behaves, then decide to take it further or not for the next outing.

I recommend Hickory Run State Park or Rickett's Glen State Park.

I think that is what they are called.

thanks for all the suggestions. These guys are not hardcore frat people and aren't out of control at all. Some of them have done fishing before so they have a little experience with outdoors. I don't really plan to let people bring any alcohol. One because it is against park regulations and I feel as though sneaking off into the woods to drink is very juvenile. I just want to enjoy being outdoors.

Also I have a decent knowledge of first aid and the other experienced guy is an EMT.

Cool, Andrew -- your fraternity bros are better behaved than most I've known then. :D

Between you and the other guy, sounds like you have the bases covered for whatever choice you make.
