Camping with the TTKZ

What happened to Santa Maria?

I was in a long distance relationship and my girlfriend didn't want to move there and she hated it in chicago, a combination of weather, cost and it being really hard to get out and do things and have a life. So we moved to the southwest (she's from new mexico) because Tucson sounded like the best place in Arizona to move to. Crappy job market, but reasonable weather and a lot of variety, and not to far from Pheonix. I say reasonable weather because it turns out anything below 112 is 'reasonable'. My car doesn't have air conditioning and has an average temperature of 120, so 112 feels pretty okay after driving to work.

Cool. Next time you go to Mt. Lemon stop at http://fortunatosdeli.com/, it's right at the fork just after you turn onto Catalina highway. Freaking awesome Italian subs. Pssst......don't tell David Brown about this place if you go there.

Great write-up. That fatwood is amazing, cross post over on W&SS, and you will be a hero.

Tell us more about that small can stove, please.

Our friend neal made it out of a large can of hominy and a smaller can of coffee. Because he was just using a knife and a single sized drill bit, it didn't turn out as functional as he wanted. With a step drill and a set of tin snips he could have gotten the air flow a lot better. It's a very generic simple push-through can in a can set up, but it would be nice for people living in cities and for car camping where we didn't want to build anything bigger.

Bravado, that place looks killer!! I haven't had a real good Itailian sub since I left Detroit. Time for a road trip
LVC, What were the temps like? Would Mt. Lemon make a good pace for a gathering when the heat breaks?

I didn't have a thermometer with me, but it seemed like they were hovering between 65-72 depending on whether the sun was out during the day, and dropped to between 55-65 during the night. It rained for like 10 hours straight while we were there which is rare for tucson. During that time the average temp in tucson was between 95-105 during the day and 78-88 during the night.

Because of it's position as a rain shadow slope mount lemmon gets way more rain and moisture which keeps the temps down, and the presence of forest also helps retain humidity and lower temerpatures by reducing the sand/open ground present to radiate heat.
