This is a very long story that has been condensed as best as I could. I advise anyone who doesnt want to read alot to run from this post.

My roommate and I decided to leave town yesterday and go camping for a few days. We got out of town and headed up the dirt road to where we were planning on camping. At one junction in the road there were multiple snow burms that had to be crossed. We got stuck on the first one which was no big deal it took us maybe 45 minutes to dig out and continue to the second one. While cleaning up the shovels a guy came up and started talking to us about our plans for the weekend which we gladly shared because we knew he couldnt get his Honda Civic up over the snow burms. He mentions something about trying another route which should be clear of most snow. Thinking nothing of this we continued up to some meadows where we planned to camp. The road was covered in snow 1 to 2 feet deep. It was a fun drive. We arrived at our camp and built a fire and began to set up camp. Once the tents were up we decided to shoot some targets. Yadda yadda long story short we end up going to bed about midnight. We are chatting between the two tents when we hear something walking around our tents. We listen for a few minutes while each of us, unaware of what the other one was doing, loaded our rifles and exit the tents. Searching the campsite we find nothing but a shadow in the distance, and upright shadow. Being as we were the only people we had seen all day we were very confused as to what/ who was up there. And then it hit us. The guy from the snow burm. The route he was planning to take around literally came out to our camp. We were officially scared beyond scared. We didnt know where he was, what he wanted, or what he had with him. We threw some logs on the fire (which by the way was not only a pain to light but a pain to keep going, this alone should have sent us home) and fired up the lantern. Throwing all of our stuff into the truck we cleaned the site in a matter of minutes and bombed down the now icy roads back to the highway. When we got back to the snow burms we were able to cross the first one with out problem but remembering that we hadnt lowered the first one we had to get out and shovel. What was once snow was now a frozen pile of ice and rocks. We looked at eachother and decided we needed out immediatly. We piled in the car, put on our seatbelts, and gunned it for the snow burm. Launching over the burm we met with a hard thud as we touched down. The next time we stopped was a stop light in town. I have never had a problem camping, I am that guy who could go to sleep in the middle of the woods and sleep more soundly than in any bed. I have never been more terrified in my life. I have definatly learned my lesson: even in the woods one must be alert and cautious about what they say to someone. So that was our night, I am bummed about the camping but I did get to try out my Kershaw Outcast a little bit. Hope no one has to suffer the same mistakes as we did.

Um ... you just saw a guy that you had talked to earlier and you were "scared beyond scared'? Must have been a scary looking guy....

what did you say that was so offensive? lol at first glance it looked like two bums on the road

did you say that was offensive? I never worry about weird people here. lol at first glance it looked like two bums on the road

You told a complete stranger you were going to an isolated area.

When you noticed someone out there, you put logs on the fire to make yourselves more visible and him, less so.

You were armed but didn't challenge someone walking around your campsite or verify his location after he left.

Be a lert. The world needs more lerts.

Hey guys I am not really looking to be criticized I am just telling a story about what happened and what I learned from it. I made some mistakes. I was scared because we were the only people to travel up the road since december and I thought that that combined with how far we were from any homes would mean that we were alone and then we find a guy walking around our campsite in the middle of nowhere who obviously wasnt looking for help. Maybe he was just trying to mess with us, but maybe he meant to do us harm. I think that having a huge fire helped us get cleaned up faster and keep warm. I wasnt really worried about him seeing because of the fire. We needed to see to pack and the lantern, fire, flashlights only added to my feeling of security.

You're being honest about what happened.

Do not let anyone fault you for how you felt or for sharing this story.

What did you do correctly ?

and what do you wish you did differently??

If you had rifles--you were more than prepared to defend yourselves..

I used to be a cop-and can tell you stories about people who shot first-and then regretted it forever...

Maybe it was a Sasquatch? What human in his right mind would walk into someone else's campsite without announcing themselves? I could understand it there were lots of campers, but you were alone. Good way to get shot.

You see any tracks? You left out what calibers your rifles were? It would make me just a shade nervous myself.

I think what you did was the right thing to do. Its easy to say point a gun at someone and shoot them if you feel you should. We are not talking about watching a movie with the hero going home and everything is A o.k. There are sick people out there. If you feel something is wrong then follow your gut as you just might be right. Guess what its your life. I bet you can go camping another time.

yea ive had this happen, i was camped on a loging road on my grandfathers land, me and a couple friends were having fun, rabbit huning, set a couple snares, didsome bushwacking, made a day in the bush. We come back to the road walked a little while and arrived at my favorite camping spot, which is a nice spot the old trucks used to turn around, we set up camp at 7:00 had supper, and went out for a short jaunt before we ran out of light. We came back to camp around 9:00, started a fire and eventually hit the hay around 12:00. I was sleeping on the outside of the tarp and i had a loaded .22 by my sleeping bag (this is a habit of mine ever sense i was a little boy and woke up in the back country with 2 yoties in camp...scared the living daylights outta me) So i fall asleep, And at god knows what hour i was awakend by the roaring of a truck. I peek down the logging road and see headlights coming towards me. Now i know that dosent seem reason for alarm, but belive me where i was it just means trouble. Theres this family and all the boys are pure trouble, assulted people, drunk and disordlerly, you name it. So i knew this truck would be these boys, i grabed my .22 and ducked behind the tent, took a deep breath and watched the truck roar past, then stop.....the cabin lights came on, went off, then they kept going. Only one of my friends woke up, and he didnt even think anything of it. Im glad those boys kept on going cause if they had came back i would not have hesitated in protecting my sleeping friends. Im also glad i woke up, or things could have gone alot worse.

Well, I DID call home down in the annapolis valley. I know you know where that is.

This isn't a criticism, just a couple of questions with hindsight. What spooked you about this guy? Did you guys feed off the fear of each other? Let me also say that if you were this freaked out by this guy and circumstances then you were correct to leave like you did. How stupid would you have felt if you didn't listen to your instinct and you guys ended up as his boy toys or dead in a unmarked grave?

I'm not sure what spooked you but I would like to know. You haven't made it clear to me that you were not looking to shoot, just to be prepared. Is this correct? Again, I'm not criticizing, just trying to understand.

Yea i know how it is, well then you just may know these boys, they live on the north Mt, out Canning way

P.s i just relized you probably know where i live down to the dot, lol theres not that many Erics in Woodville

haha, are there last names by any chance a muse, or mabye a mulbarry? I dont remember every on from around there, But I USED to know my way around, many nice fishing stops out in the mersy, I dont know if you've been there but a great place. Ohh, mabye a hannam? :D

We had several rifles and a shotgun. Lets see Enfield .303, Weatherby .30-06 Savage .30-06, Remington .22, Remington 12 guage. We were mainly using the Enfield as all we had was bird shot for the shotgun. We didnt intend to shoot anyone unless we had to however we did shoot a stump a couple times in warning. There werent any tracks that we could see and I will admit we didnt really look for any. We were in a hurry to get out and in that state I am not sure I could tell my tracks from my roommates and he wears like size 13 boots compared to my 10s. This guy spooked me number 1 because he was cruising in the woods where there was alot of snow in a car. Not that I have anything against cars in the woods its just not something alot of people do. Number 2 he was just creepy looking, he seemed like trouble and I cant discribe why. You would have had to be there. The biggest thing though was that I didnt listen to him closely when he mentioned the upper road that connects from the highway and was probably clear of snow. It really wasnt any feeding off of each others fear, it was more like we both knew something was up and came to the consensus that we needed to get out of there. Thanks guys for your support. I will definatly sit down and figure out what we did right and wrong and post about that later.
