Camping

Ok, First I want to say, Awsome 1000th Post :d

Ok, now for the detailed stuff.

First off, Im assuming you know how to get on the 101 Via throgh kent ville, or the 221 Highway. Once you get on the 101, your going to start driving towards Bridgetown, though it wont be on the signs, I think they say something like annapolis, or digby, but thats the way you want to go, or to make it eaiser its heading west(going away from halifax) Now once yor on the highway, its going to be about and hour, or hour an a half until you get to Bridgtown. But once you do, take that exit. when you come to the end of the off ramp, your going to want to turn right. Or, if you need gas, go straight to the esso station, the when leaving the esso, turn left ;) Now, after a minute or two, you'll go past a high school on you left, the a little bit more you'll see the Bridgetown town hall, Your going to turn left once you come to the hall, I think the street is queen street. Now, follow this road untill you come to a T intersection. Turn left and then take your first right, it will say your going towards West Dalhousie. Now, after a scenic drive up the "mountain", more like a large hill, you have been driving for about 20 minutes when you will come to the end of the road, This again is another T section, you want to turn left. Now, For about the next 10 Km, there are going to be the bulk of houses, then it will fan out more, this is a nice little comunity, people walking down the road will say hi, and its just plainly nice. But they are kinda skeptical, so dont get to friendly . Ok, now after driving about 5,6 minutes you are going to come to Two lakes, one on your right and one on your left, these lakes are called Spectical lake, or the one on the right was more recently renamed Durlings lake. Now, after these lakes, there is goig to be a little pond on the right, then you will go up a hill, then the next road on the right is called Gillis Road, its an old dirt road that goes back to the mersy, After a while of driving you will Come to a gate, now depending on the time of year, it may or may not be open, So I sugest if you have a bike, bring it along, because you may make the rest of the trip on bike. So, when and if you keep going, I wouldn't sugest Turning off the main road, its twisted as hell in there and you'll just get lost, unless you have a map of the area.

Then, when you want to go, just to the same steps, Just backwords.

Ohh, Also, something you may, or may not like. I you keep going straight instead of turn onto gillis, you will come to another dirt road that goes for About 7-10 km,and when you take a right it then turns into the #10 which will take you to Bridgwater, But their are some very nice spots along that road, Nice river, ponds and even a few lakes. Theres one piticular stream, just after you come off the dirt road about 2-3 km down the road that is very nice for fly fishing. BTW, its mostly Brooke, and lake trout. ( Brown, and specaled trout)

So there ya go, a Adventure in the annapolis valley.

Someone's been watching a few too many scary movies.

so it was definitely the guy from earlier, or you just think it may have been?

i can see how this could be scary. it would be kind of hard to ignore this situation and go back to sleep while there is an unexpected person walking around in the middle of the night. it doesn't sound like you were in an area where this would be considered normal.

Monky...from time to time in all our lives we run into situations where the best plan is to get out .

As a read your story I had two ideas where you were going to get ...

1st - If both you and your friend were hearing things and loading guns in the dark,,,trouble is on it's way......There are few happy endings to a story that starts out with two guys in different tents loading guns and listening to a strange sound in the dark...

2nd. it was a animal?
as i read your story I came away from it with the idea that it was more than likely an animal....some are so used to people and campfire that they run TO the fire looking for SMORES....

You told a complete stranger you were going to an isolated area.

.
If you live in an area where two strong boys cant talk to other guys they run into about their camping trip, then you better move to another town.

One of the joys of camping is being about to plan and talk to others about camping. Thats how people find out about great camping spots...

Actually I would have to say you did alright. Maybe in retrospect folks might play monday morning quarterback but if YOU had bad feelings, trust yer gut! I have slipped out of sight in camp when strangers have walked/driven in. I figure if I drove 20-30 miles deep into the woods, any reasonable person should figure I do not want company so if anyone approches I get a little defensive. I usually camp with friends and if we are approached at least one of us moves into a cover position without being too abvious. Paranoid? Maybe. Safe? Definitely! If you don't know what kinda crap can happen in the woods, imagine something like 3 guys telling you they are gonna take your rifle from you when you are alone. I have had it happen and really thought I was gonna have to shoot. Luckily that day they flinched :) A guy who worked at the same place as I was followed back to his camp and killed after walking into a grow field near Mt Hood a few years back. Always trust your gut. I am a firm believer in the human ability to read a situation. Might not be able to explain it but if something creeps me out......I back off before confrontation if possible. Sometimes that means leaving early and there is no shame in that. In the future I would suggest that you keep your plans private when dealing with strangers and if someone is in your AO without reason at night don't light yourself up. Maybe even douse a fire and move to a safer position even if it is only a few feet. Do stay together. That was one thing you did right.

The wife and I are once camping at Woodby Island WA, at the state park.

It was totally dark and lightly raining. We had a nice little fire going and as my wife sat at the table I sat on a log and cracked open a beer.
As I tipped back for a big sip I looked over at my wife and suddenly saw sitting next to her at the table was a raccoon who was busy digging in a backpack.

I tossed the full beer can at the coon as hard as a guy could, and hit him right in the head!

I was a little scared at the time, I mean the wild animal was one foot away from my wife!
I knew that as hard as that full beer can had hit the head of the racoon that it had to have hurt him if not almost killed the beast.

I got out my maglite and started to shine the woods about 50 feet away.
I saw nothing.
I dropped the light closer and scanned the tall grass closer and closer to where we were camped.
Then I heard a strange sound right in front of me, I looked down and saw something moveing by my toes.
I shined the maglite down by my feet and was stunned to see les that a foot from me that the coon was back digging in the same backpack as if nothing had happend to him....
Like he owned this spot....

It was for sure not an animal. I have had animals in camp on many occasions but our food was 50-60 feet away as was our cooking ware, next to the fire. I am certain after seeing the shape in the dark that it was a person. I am therefore reasonably certain that it was the same guy. The only people besides him that knew where we were going to be were my parents and they were 60+ miles away. It would be a pretty amazing thing to stumble upon someone in that area this time of year. The fire was down to coals by time we got out of our tents and was re-started more for warmth and to see the immediate area around the fire where most of our camping equipment was, this also helped us check on the far end of the camp while we were individualy taking our tents down. I can see how in the future it may be wise to douse the fire and stay hidden. Hopefully this will never happen again but if it does I will be better prepared.

Hey Munky...

This story sounds like a cross between Broke Back Mountain, The Hills Have Eyes and Road Trip all rolled into one :)

Munky, in this case, i bet it would have been nice to have some night vision equipment with you (mall ninja'ish?)

Normark, don't forget another scary one: Deliverance

Munky I think you did the right thing getting out of there, wether you fears were valid or not, wether it was a person or an animal doesent matter, you were scared in a remote area and armed. this is a combination, that could have lead to disaster.

I dont know if driving out at night was all that safe considering the terrain but i can see how it was your best option (an accident could have made you an even easier target)

I don't agree with firing warning shots especially if you werent 100% sure not only that there was someone out there but that the weren't just camping in the same area, perhaps by accident or for their own security. (its not always easy to see another camp at night).

The point is you got out of there and you leaned and i hope you take the criticizm of myself and others and consider it, wether you agre or not with it. that is the way this forum works.
