Can’t get 0460 back together UPDATE, Fixed!

With the knife assembled it looks like the bearings are sitting too deeply in the CF side and too high on the ti side. I'd try stacking both washers on the CF side.

Edit: actually nevermind, it looks like both washers are marked from bearings running on them...

Normally, the washers are to protect the softer scales from denting due to overtightening the pivot, so one on each side makes sense. They both show wear so they shouldn’t be stacked.

Check the pivot is inserted from the correct side? Try reversing it. Is the stop pin fully seated? Try reversing that too.

I take apart just about every new knife i get and these 2 adjustments have been the only 'sometimes quirks' with reassembly

Thanks for all the advise. No luck again with it last night, but will try again this evening if I have time.

I found this video of a 0460ti that has two washers in it. I'm going to try what this guy does with the backspacer and see if that works:

I don't think any of my ZTs have a washer on the ti side. I thought maybe they added one with this model?

OP, are you sure it was there before? If not, I wonder how it got there? This is a bit of a head scratcher.

I'm sure the second washer was there when I disassembled the knife. No other spare parts were around my work area (the kitchen table) when I took it apart. Also, assembling the knife with one washer left out or both washers put together on the carbon fiber side makes it worse.

I will get it figured out. Kind of a fun puzzle yet somewhat infuriating at the same time...

Might even be a good idea to get his take on your problem.

Very hard to say based on the pics. I would have to put it in my hands to say for sure. If the OP decides to give up I am happy to take a look at it. You can ship it to me at:

USA Made Blade
PO box 3385
Salisbury, NC 28145

Just include a note reminding me this was from the blade forum ZT0460 post. I will be happy to get it working right and back in the mail to you the next day, or ship it on to ZT for them to fix. At least that way we might all get an answer to the mystery. If you ship it to ZT they will just send it back assembled with no explanation as to what might have been wrong.

Thanks whitty, I will consider that. Tried messing with the backspacer as you did in the video, no dice.

The burning of incense and chanting to the blade gods is next up...

It was Teflon tape in the pivot screw.

For years I have been using plumber's tape instead of loctite in the pivot without issue. Well, this time it got bunched up in the bottom of the female end of the pivot screw. When I assembled the knife, the screw felt all the way bottomed out when in fact it was stuck on a clump of tape preventing it from screwing all the way in.

Runs like a top now and I am an expert in taking down the 0460 now.

Thanks for all the time you spent in trying to help.

Great job! I just bought one for 169 from DLT. I still think it should be milled out
to make it lighter...but 20cv blade and nice bearings...I could not resist.

No wonder yours was loose with the pivot screws "tight"!!!!
Premium EDC for sure! Enjoy and best wishes!!!!!

I would say you got a latest 0460ti, that why you have 2 washers instead of 1.
Click the link on my signature, that would give you a good idea of what need to be done. Always PM me if you have questions.

So far only my 0470 and 0462 have washers on both sides. I just ordered a 460Ti
from DLT on sale and expect it will have steel washers on both sides too. It really improves
the action. My 0462CF falls shut FAST. It is epic in F&F and action. Just an amazing Sinkevich.

It bears repeating...all of my ZT knives are Sinkevich designs.

Glad you figured it out! We'll add teflon tape to the list of things to check if people have assembly issues lol!

Go LocTite or go home!

I actually have the blue mid strength for pivots and use a bit of purple low strength for scales. I use it on other things too, since I have it around.

The 0609 has washers on both sides. I expect most of the newer ZT’s will. I think it’s interesting that ZT retooled along the way to add one to the Ti side of the 0460. Mine functions flawlessly without it, and it’s not exactly like its a hard use folder.

to former FMF:

I use the blue on pivots. Most of my knives don't need it for the scales.
I too am glad ZT is switching over to washers. My 0452 does not have them
and it's action is not as good as my 0462 which does. Dissimilar metals at
a bearing interface is not the best idea...and Ti is very prone to galling.
It is my opinion that using Ti as one side of a ball bearing race is a poor choice.
Whether or not it affects users notwithstanding.
