Can’t imagine wanting to use anything other than a wharncliffe

I think 2" cutting edge length or less is the best for wharncliffe blades, anything more goes into tactical territory with the compromising of precision and control. Lambsfoot and sherpfoot blades can be a llittle longer and sturdier though.

The biggest problem I see with straight edges is the way the tip wears with hard use. It almost seems like it is trying to become a swept up tip. So you either have to sharpen away the entire edge to fix the point or bring the spine back to regain the point.

...

I have a number of straight edge blades in the Wharncliffe, Sheepsfoot, and Lambsfoot families. I used to carry them almost exclusively, but found the above comment from eveled eveled to be true for myself, and a major point of frustration over time. So I now prefer something with some degree of belly, along with a decent point, to be more preferable for myself.

My favorite Wharncliffe blade is typically a small secondary blade on something like the Eureka Jack.

In my everyday travels the "Modified Wharncliffe" blade, on single blade knives, is the most versatile.

The top four knives are used more than the Case wharncliffe at the bottom. Not sure the fourth fromthe top is claassified as a wharncliffe. The first rivals Opinel for food preparation, the second is very sturdy and with the sharpest tip of all knives I have, the third and forth are not only very pocketable, but also more practical than the fifth for the everyday tasks I have encountered. As I have already mentioned, to me wharncliffe is for up to 2", after that lambfoot or sheepfoot are preferable.

The Eureka Jack wharncliffe is my absolute favorite. Very thin stock paired with a fantastic grind and it’s not very tall. It’s fantastic at little detail work. I daily a Eureka Jack just for the wharncliffe, the spear is an added bonus.
