can a knife be too big

you are correct creel well if I went to alaska I would bring 3 or 4 knives maybe five alas the only purpose of this thread was for feedback and i got alot for my first time writing a thread thanks all

but what if.....

If a frog had wings it wouldn't bump it's rear end when it hopped either...lol...

I have spent time in the wilderness including a 30+ day stint on the Appalachian Trail. The majority of my time in the woods saw me carrying these two knives, a Gerber Flayer and an Camillus Demo knife.

When it comes to small game it is easier to peel them rather than to try and skin them. The Flayer while having a bit of belly does do well as a fillet knife as well. I also carried a wire saw as well but seldom used it as it is faster and easier to break deadwood in the crotch of a tree. I also carried a S&W 2 1/2 inch K-frame in 38 and a Armalite AR-7 Rifle just about everywhere I went. If I didn't have the Flayer with me it would be another 4-5" fixed blade like a Marble Expert. I never ran into a situation were I felt I needed or wanted anything larger. If I was in the jungle then I would carry a machete, if I was in combat and pulling tunnel rat duty I would want something like my Hattori fighter. But I cannot think of anywhere in the US I would need more than those twp knives.

4-5" fixed blade full tang.

.20-.25" spine.

needs enough belly for dressing game.

I'd prefer a tough rather than hard steel.

The poster above me makes a good point, while I didn't spend 30+ continuous on the AT, I did my fair share of hiking in Georgia, TN, and the Carolinas along that same trail...usually in 5-8 day spreads. Never needed a heavy chopper (plenty of dead undergrowth and felled trees), but a knife similar to the above specs served me well.

Absintheur, while the AR7's a decent/compact squirrel/rabbit rifle, that K-frame was only gonna piss a momma bear off.:D I carried a model 66, and my buddy had a 3" model29 for predators (both 2 and 4 legged).

The K-frame was loaded with Super-Vels back in the day and was meant for 2 legged predators although I was and still am, confident enough in it to turn a black bear though today it would be loaded with 200 grain SWCs. I encountered several bears but never had a problem...I normally talk or sing to myself when hiking...gives the bears plenty of warning....of course everyone runs when I sing...lol.

Yes, a knife can be too big! An Army parachutist can't abide a knife with a 12inch blade! A military pilot cannot afford a knife with a seven inch blade. Troops on the ground rarely need anything over 6-7 inches in blade length. Mechanized troops (Infantry in armored personnel carriers) can get hung up on long knives. You've got to match your needs and your carry method.
