Can animals smell fear?

Great thread!
Hello Iam a enthausiastic reader, not a great writer because I am not very familiar with yout language ( but reading now for about 1/2 year helps ;)
What I waould like to say.
A blind researce in germany showed that women get more at ease when a man does not wear any deodorant. they feel much more relaxed and comfortable whem thye smelled the 'normal odor' . They tested it in a period of 2 weeks having 15 men with and 15 without using deodorant. in different situations but in close contact, meening sitting standing side by side in busses, cafe's and so on.This measuring like heartbeat, hormones and all other things they could mearusere at a distance, or at a later time without disturbing.

For animal acounter I know( learned/ saw this in a police squad where I was a sport instructor) they smell 'it', by the sort of hormones and aminoacids witch one does release when encountering. Wether you are happy, angry, sad, affraid. There are aslo misinterpetations by annimals. If the smell is an exiting one it could be interpreted as afraid and the other way arround. But what also is really importand, is the way you show your self with that scent, and also the way you use youre voice ( , friendly, agressive, happy etc.) it can really mislead a dog/annimal.
I hope this is interesting sorry for the bad writing :footinmou

Ever noticed that minding your own buiseniss can make other( not known) people getting to go mad? It is the lack of atantion that they are really mad about.

I agree with most. I can tell you that when you arn't looking for game, they are there. when you are, they seem to dissapear. This has happened at least a hundred times to me. They even seem to know when I'm scouting them. They are slightly skiddish. One thing is certian, My life has been saved at least twice by the way I have thought and presented myself to other humans. I am confident in my abilities to defend myself and others can sense it.

It has been my experience on many of occassions that the overall presentation of fear is apperant to many animlas. Bears and K-9s both have a sense of self preservation and oddly enoough their body jestures are the same when in confrontation they both lower their heads pull down the ears and elongate their jaw lines amongst other physiological responses to aggression. the also look for signs of submission in cases of prey and victims.

I have often backed off an attacking dog by showing an aggressive response it is inate to them and these things they can sense. Bear have been known to attack simply because people have acted like prey. you have to know their behavior and the appropriate response.
