Hay guys, yet another question. I picked this up from my bro who got it from a storage unit auction. I spoke with our next door neighbor who is owns a logging business and he said it looks to be a blade from a mini mill. What kind of steel is this? There are no markings on it at all and it seems to have a center piece welded into it. Thanks for any help, I was hoping for some free knife steel with this?

A lot of these old blades are l6.

A maker named Jakie Prothro swears by these old saw blades. He torch cuts the blanks and lightly forges the bevels. He soaks a little above critical and oil quenches like simple steel. He usually whittles a bit of mild steel plate with his blades to impress customers.

Thanks! I was thinking it was in the L type of steel but wasnt sure. Do you know about how much it costs to have steel tested?
Thanks a bunch,
Jake

I costs about $40 unless you have multiples done. I sent some off and am still waiting. We gathered a bunch together so it would only be $25/sample. If you can wait then it is definitely worth it. if not you can do your own testing to see how it responds to HT. It is better if you get it analyzed so you know exactly what you have.

That is a modern blade by looking at the teeth shape and arbhor hole..Older ones are likely l6 but new ones could be anything.

I think I will just screw around with it and try to HT it with my torch first to see what happens.
Thanks guys,
Jake

I have a couple with that style teeth. The one I cut up gave me fits trying to get a good HT on. Never did get what I thought was maximum performance. They were used on slab/cutuff saws, powered off flatbelt via tractor pulley.
