Can anybody explain the SUBENZA's steller reputation?

Ever since I've been on BF I've heard nothing but amazing praise for the Subenza. I've seen them and they look pretty plain but I've never owned one to put it through it's paces.

What makes the Subenza so head and shoulders above other quality folders?

Please enlighten me:^)

Well, not everyone is nuts about the Sebenza. I don't own one. But it comes with a really sharp cutting edge, an excellent blade, has a very reliable locking mechanism, is extremely strong and precisely made. In short, it is a great using knife. For a strong, effective, and reliable cutting tool, it is hard to find one that is better that no one would argue with you about. There are others that are just as good to some folks point of view though, and maybe better in my mind.

If I could afford one, I'd own one, but I can't, so I don't, but what steve said is true. The lock is smooth, solid, and trustworthy, blade steel is great, and the reputation is for very high quality. I didn't get it either till I held one...

Well...Sebenzas come with very sharp blades, a great lock-up, and are made of good material. However, the thing that impressed me so much that I knew I had to have one was that once a Sebenza locks open, it feels like a one piece knife. Absolutely NO blade wiggle.

Plato had this notion called the Plotonic Ideal, which sugessted that somewhere-someplace existed the perfect creation of a thing-the perfect chair-watch-car whatever. In some respects the Sebenza is the perfect knife.

Have only two of these grey marvels so I'm a long way from being an expert. Could be any of these things:

- Premium steel blade (BG42) and heat treat, razor sharp out of the box.
- Incredible tolerances in parts and fitting. Man, I don't believe these guys - they even polished and rounded the grooves on the blade spine.
- Integral lock is a thick slab of titanium which is probably as strong as folding knives go.
- Merciless QC
- Stonewash finish hides minor scratches
- Disassembles easily for cleaning even to an all-thumbs person (me)
- Great service from CRK

Engineered quality with emphasis on function produces a knife that is beautiful in its simplicity.

I own a sebenza and what I say is that they have beautiful form and function. They are unbeleivable.

I used to be disgusted .Now I am just amused....I feel much better now that I have given up all hope

Simple, the best materials, simple but superbe design, micro-tolerance build, and backed up with great after sales support (Reeves offers referbishing for a moderate charge). Once you see how elegantly simlple the whole line is, you'll find enlightenment.

Sebbies are one of those few items out there where even a novice can notice the difference.

I use audio systems as an example. Its really easy to get caught up in hype and pay a lot of money for "the" sound system in your car or home with "the" speakers, "the" amp, "the" cable, and frankly when you are comparing quality systems the average spare guy can't really tell the difference. The Emperor's New Clothes mentality clicks in and because one doesn't want to be looked at as less sophisticated or intelligent they tend to agree with the popular opinion. Frequently one has to compare items like this side by side to notice the real difference.

However sometimes an item or an improvement comes along that can be appreciated by anyone. DVD's and HDTV come to mind because you don't even have to see a traditional screen side by side with it to notice the improvement in quality.

Sebenzas are like this. Sure there is a certain amount of hype, a bit of a cult like status, and because of the cost an exclusive quality to them but by and large you'll find that almost everybody that picks one up notices the differences between them and any other production knife you care to name.

In summary: There is substance behind the reputation. Its that simple.

No, in reality, they are simplicity in its most complex form. Beauty made steel and titanium.

For those who don't know Tom, he builds fine folders, some of which are lefty

, has impressed the crap out of UW Mitch, and won't come to either NYC show so I can handle one of his TNT's.

May make me leave the confines of the East Coast in search of "hands-on" experience.

Enjoy the show all of you.

Well, my Sebenza has spoiled me rotten. Rotten I say! It is the most expensive knife I own, and even though it almost costs a weeks pay, I'd replace it in a heartbeat. Since I got my Sebenza (4 months) I havent been able to realistically consider any other folder. Well...actually, I'd like to get a MT LCC for a beater, but that's about it. I don't buy knives to look at (yet).
