A lot of those are forge welded bits. If that one is it may well be worn down past the steel.
 
What about a look at the '52? I'm curious now!

Here it is, and 300Six to keep it on topic how about adding that restoring this car got me into fixing old beat up things and that's how I wound up here on the axe forum! Walla! By the way restoring old cars is a pain in the rear I do not recommend it, axes are much better.
 
A vinegar soak (or other acids) will reveal the amount of bit steel remaining. The treated steel will turn dark gray, the rest will be medium gray.

or hit the edge with a file. if its hard its got steel left. if it soft as butter, its all gone. there may be some left in the center, and none on the heel and toe. will be easy to feel with a file.
