I grabbed this in a junk shop I frequent for $10.00. The handle seems to be original, there is red rezin fill in the head covering the wedge. It's marked made in Sweden on one side of the blade and a 3 1/2 weight mark on the other, no other marks, it was blue. The head is 7 1/2 inches from mid blade to poll and 4 3/8th from tip to tip across the edge.
The handle 28 inches and is marked Hickory in gold and there was a stick on label on the handle as well.
Thought maybe some of you axe geniuses might know who made it by the possible clues.:D

Thanks and best regards

Without looking closer I'm gonna go with Super Banko

Hi there devilpig, thanks for that info, I think you are right. Not much info on the net about the company Sater Banko but it looks like all the stuff on the net is marked. They also seem to have made all the Swedish military axes up until the closed down in the early 60s. I found one mention of the edges of these axes being very thin in profile, this axes surely is, between the eye and the edge is about 1/8th inch concave on the face. They say they are for standing softwood.
Most of the bits and pieces I found are from europe and Britain, doesn't seem to have been marketed over here.

Any more info would be appreciated.

Best regards

Robin

Evidently on their military issued axes and hatchets they didn't typically mark them with "Banko" or any variation thereof. They would simply mark them with "Made in Sweden". They also used that blue paint on the heads which is a distinct color and pretty easy to recognize. I'm not sure of the steel they used, but I know that mine is super sharp and is one of my favorites.

Thanks for the update devil. It is an amazing softwood axe and definately a favourite of mine.

Best regards

Robin
