can anyone recommend a knife that is locked in the closed position?

I currently carry a Gerber obsidian. With 2 kids under the age of 4, I like the added safety of the knife being locked in the closed position.

Can anyone recommend other knives or manufacturers / mechanism that offers this protection?

Some sog Folders can be locked in the closed position. Flash, aegis, trident are a few.

Depending on where you live...if automatics are legal they lock in the closed position as well. Typically...assisted knives (i.e. kershaw leek) will also lock in the closed position. Benchmade has a few as well. (my Warn axis lock 583-1 locks shut/open)

Look at the Kershaw Leek. It is available in many different "flavors." Oh I just looked at the post above. What he said. :D

CRKT Lake 111 locks closed as well, and it's not an assisted open knife.

The original 580-series do as well, e.g. 585 Mini-barrage. I have two little girls, 1 & 3 yrs, and my 585 is the knife that I am least concerned about them getting their hands on. Not that I let that happen if it can be avoided.

To elaborate on what others have said:
Assisted, automatic, button lock, and butterfly knives sometimes (always, in the case of butterfly knives,) come with safeties in order to prevent them from opening in the pocket.
Other than balisongs, the addition of a safety varies from model to model. SOG and Kershaw are two companies already mentioned, that have knives with safeties. Most of SOG's AOs have them, while only a few Kershaws do. Most auto manufacturers make some knives with safeties on them.
Hogue button lock (non-automatic) knives have safeties on them, too. If you don't want an AO, auto, slipjoint, or balisong, they're the way to go.
Another thing I'd like to add is that a slipjoint with a strong pull will probably be near impossible for someone under four years old to open. I've heard that GEC knives have pretty strong pulls; maybe look into them?

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I will have to look into the kershaw and SOG options. I don't want an AO. still not totally convinced the are legal in PA. I also want somethig that I can open one handed . I know - best of both worlds - I can open it easily, but the kids can't.

Gerber Paul knives lock in the closed position

I wonder if the Lone Wolf axial locks that BM is making also lock closed? IIRC, the Hogue/Elishewitz folder is a button lock and also has a safety lock on it? None of those are AO.

Many kerahaws like the leek, schallion, and the chive have a lock. Some sog's like the aiges mini aegis, flash1 and2 .

THey did, but I believe they've all been disco'd. I'm speaking of the axial locks specifically, not the current "Paul" BMs.

Only the AO Kershaws have the lock and it is just a small plastic slide from what I have seen. Mine tended to slide unlocked on its own and eventually broke with not much use. However it would be real easy to fix and Kershaw will send you the parts free of charge.

I believe one of the locks Lionsteel made will lock closed. I'm not positive about that as I only briefly held it a while ago so maybe someone can confirm that.

I live in Pittsburgh and you can carry all most any thing but an Auto but assist are ok. I carry a Benchmade 581 barrage often its a sweet package with the M390 steel and nice looks it has a safety that is hidden in the top of the backspacer and would be kinda hard for a little one to get at where the SOG safety is obvious. The qualty of the SOG vrs the benchmade is like night and day too. heres a pick of the two knives and the locks. Also the lock on the benchmade will lock the blade in the open position where the SOG locking mech will not lock the blade in the open position just in the closed. Sorry for the crappy iPhone photo but its quick and gives you a look at the 2 locks.

Just a thought but, kids can be incredibly clever. If a kid can figure out how to open a folder, I would assume that they could also figure out how to unlock a closed folder as well. I wouldn't assume that just because a folder can be locked closed that a kid won't be able to open it.

Heck, to tell you the truth, if one of my kids couldn't figure out how to unlock a folder, I'd be a bit disappointed. And a bit concerned.
