When you only make a few knives here and there shipping ends up costing as much or more than the heat treating.

Im looking for some relatively thin stock .70 - .10 inch, 2 or more inches wide and 10-12 inches in length. I'll consider most any steel as long as it is within my dimensional requirements.

EDIT: Just did the math I will pay $35 + Shipping for two pieces of oil hardening steel at 60-61 HRC (1095,1084,52100,w1,w2,15n20,L6)

So if the steel costs you ~$5 you make $30 for ~1.5 hours of you time and you get to help me give my father in law something nice.

At this price you can save me ~ $2-$5 and 3-4 weeks of waiting

Yes just buy a file. They do make some gigantic files. Even bigger than these. You can see the one foot mark on the tape measure in the second photo bellow.
Or buy a knife that is close to the way you want it and mod the heck out of it. I do that all the time.
I know this doesn't help much but gives you something to look at and read until the real deal comes along. Don't underestimate how long it is going to take to slowly grind the hard blank into shape. Have to grind slow (keep it cool) so the temper isn't screwed up. May be worth your money to pay shipping and heat treating considering how long it takes to grind a hard blank into shape. Consider what your time is worth. I'm just playing around and not trying to make money so I do what I do for me alone.

This blade I ground all the teeth off of . . . it was a junk yard file. I literally found it laying in the dirt at a scrap yard and payed by the pound for it and several others. Mind . . . I didn't remove the teeth using the white stones, I ground them off on a power machine.

Big files

I ground this knife; the smaller Ti Lite at the bottom of the photo

Into a full flat ground . . . ~ 1.9mm useful EDC.

this 5mm thick pry bar

To a svelt 2.2mm slicer

And I can tell you they took a whhhhhhhile . . . even though they started out blade shaped and not full thickness all the way across.

hey wowbagger thanks for replying you've got some cool projects.

I do occasionally make file knives. In fact i have one in the for sale section right now. The reason I dont want to use files for this project is because I want to make a couple of kitchen knives and the files i have to get the size i need are just to big and i dont have a forge yet.

I would just send out for heat treat on this project but I doubt i would be able to finish before fathers day. My father in law is really into cooking and i still havnt made him a kitchen knife :oops:
