Can anyone tell me if this is a fake Benchmade?

I bought this knife on ebay. It was sold as a used, in good condition Benchmade (970?). It has no other marks on it beside the benchmade logo. The sharpening on the blade is not what I would expect from a reputable company. That said, I'm used to Pro-techs and Microtechs.

I'll admit I haven't owned a benchmade before. If this is what they are like, I want no part of it. The knife has very tight action (hard to deploy. This is caused by a really tight liner that impedes the movement of the blade while opening. When open, it locks up so tight it hurts my thumb to disengage the liner lock.

Can someone help me prove either way? I can take more detailed pictures if someone will direct me to a detail that will authenticate it.
If it is in fact a BM, can I send it back to Benchmade and have them fix it?

Thanks,

Hendrix:) :)

That knife is indeed a Benchmade. It's called the CQC-7. There are 2 sizes the 970, and 975. You have the smaller of the 2. It's got a chisel ground edge (one side is sharpened) and aggressive half serrated ATS-34 blade. The liners are titanium I believe, and they shouldn't be impeding the action. What you need to do is take some fine oil and lubricate the knife so it can move unimpeded. If you still have trouble, send it in to Benchmade. They should cover all costs including shipping.

Oils I'd recommend are Tufglide, Militech-1, and hair clipper oil. Any of those should do the trick for you.

For an EDC, there are better Benchmades than the one you've got. If you're unhappy with it, you should try one of the others. I know you'd like them. You wouldn't have any trouble selling the one you've got in order to fund a new one. I recommend the 710, 705, Griptillian (a cheaper knife, but still great), and pretty much all the others, though those are my favorites.

I also came upon a new conclusion based on one of your pics. From what I can see of the backside of the edge, there is carbide coating on it (just on the back and I believe on the sharpened part of the front side). If this is so, you have the 970T which is actually made of Titanium rather than ATS-34. I wouldn't recommend using that blade if I were you. It was designed to be a non magnetic blade for the US NAVY SEALS which is the reason Titanium was used. The Carbide is to help it hold an edge. Titanium doesn't have very good edge holding capabilities and would perform horribly. The good news is that IF it IS titanium, it's worth more and you could sell it for a decent sum and buy a very nice Benchmade for EDC.

how much did you pay, I might take it off your hands if you don't like it. I had one years ago, and I kinda regret getting rid of it. Pm me if you'd like.

I would send it back to benchmade. For the $5 ( the cost for the lifesharp ) and the cost of shipping it to them: you will get back a knife that has been sharpened, screws replaced as needed, and tuned with new washers. I have sent many back over the years and am since amazed at their customer service. Mind you, you should send back UspS insured, but you get back a factory fresh benchmade rather then an ebay dump. PS. I take off the pocket clip and put it and the screws in my as needed box, they will put a new one on.

use some miltec-1 its a metal lube that benchmade uses on there knife and check the screw it might be to tight

I took a picture of my own of the coating on the backside of the blade. If it is the Titanium bladed one, I guess that would be cool. I'm taking pbubsy's advice and getting rid of it in that case. I just wanted a tough ATS-34 EDC.

Does this new pic look like what you're talking about?

Why yes it does. If you want to know what it's worth, shoot me an email. I can tell you what I sold mine for.

to make the lock disengae better get a #2 pencil and rub the lead on the back of the blade were the lock engages that will lube it and make it release better.
