I Bought some stuff off of a retiring knifemaker.
Does anyone know what this stuff is?
1. The first one might be rag micarta? (Might also be some old kitchen counter top.)
2. No idea but it looks cool.

Thanks Bill. There were some other slabs of Corian in the boxes so that makes sense.

Second one looks like "fire hose" . Probably from Shadetree Phenolics. It is made from the fiberglass hoses that firemen use.

Hengelo, you may be right. It has kind of a gold or bronze color to it though.

Stacey, I didnt have any "fuzziness" when i put it to the grinder.
My other picture wasn't the best either.

I don't think the first one is corian. It looks like there is fuzz on the back of the cut edge. I'm thinking some kind of rag mycarta

Great, thank you. The only carbon fiber I've seen is the silver/black so that was throwing me off.

I appreciate the help guys!

The ragged/torn looking edge on the first one doesn't look like corian. Doesn't really look like rag micarta either.

Really sure that the second one is something someone made up. It's carbon fiber / Kevlar cloth. Look at ebay carbon fiber/Kevlar cloth and you'll see that stuff in unlaminated form.

Cf, shreds into little fish hooks that once they are in your lungs, The only way to to get them out is autopsy,

Be kind to your lungs when grinding it and really most all of the other materials we use and wear a proper Respirator. :)

Laurence, Your advice to wear a respirator is always good. I refuse to grind carbon fiber any more. In my experience it produces a fine black dust that gets into everything in my shop as well as the pores in my skin and gets trapped in my clothing. I had to clean my shop for two days the last time I used the material and the health hazard you stated scares me to death. Do you still use it? I just don't think the reward is worth the risk and the cleanup. It gets into the tiny crevices of my machinery and is almost impossible to get rid of. Just my opinion. Your knives are really great and you do not need carbon fiber to make them nice. Larry Lehman
