I think its a baculum but I have no idea from what kind of animal. I found it in a trash pile from an old house.

It's 18" long, almost 2" diameter at thickest point and about an 1 1/4" at the narrowest.

The ends have nuts glued in. I have no idea what it was being used for?

There is a 1/4" chip in the narrow end.

It's very hard and doesn't seem chalky. Is it useful as handle material? Could it be from a bull or a horse, those are plentiful in my neck of the woods? Is it garbage?

I agree that it looks like a baculum. I don't know of any other bones that have a curve in them like that. I know that bulls don't have a baculum, but it could be from any number of animals. Bone is pretty distinctive smelling when you machine or sand it. If you sand a little section of it you may be able to tell if it is bone or not. As to its usefulness as a handle, if it is bone then I'm sure there is info in the forum you can search that will help you out.

Okay, a bit of research and I now know that horses do not have baculum either. I agree it fits within the size of a "normal" walrus and looks most similar to that. Did I really luck into a piece of oosik?

Tim37a - Baculum is the name of the bone located in the penis of some mammals. Oosik is the baculum from a walrus and is reported to be an excellent handle material due to it not becoming slippery when wet or bloody. I can't verify that but maybe I will soon.

In that last picture of the chip, it looks to me like it has been sanded previously (diagonal striations) and the inside looks calcified. What do you guys think?

I think the count gets an A+ for the matching game here. The nuts in the end make it look like it was bolted/screwed between two vertical panels like a coat rack or hanger bar in a wardrobe or something... I dunno, just a thought... hah, a penis bone with two nuts attached... The chip does make it look like the 'right stuff' with the obvious granularity.

Really surprised nobody has made a boner joke yet. Maybe this place is getting too high-brow for me...

It is an oosik......a rather nice large one and in good shape.
It makes great handles, but is probably worth more as a specimen in that size. It should bring about $200.

My guess on the nuts is that it was on a display stand or might even have been make into a lamp.

Looks like it was used as a table leg...

Also agree that it sure looks like a Walrus Oosik.

Some of you might get a kick outta this. ;) :D

ODE TO AN OOSIK

Strange things have been done in the Midnight Sun
and the story books are full,
But the strangest tale concerns the male
magnificent walrus bull!

I know it's rude, quite common and crude,
perhaps it is grossly unkind;
But with first glance at least, this bewhiskered beast,
is as ugly in front as behind.

Look once again, take a second look - then
you'll see he's not ugly or vile -
There's a hint of a grin, in that blubbery chin -
and the eyes have a sly secret smile.

How can this be, this clandestine glee
that exudes from the walrus like music?
He knows, there inside, beneath blubber and hide
lies a splendid contrivance - the Oosik!

"Oosik" you say - and quite well you may,
I'll explain if you keep it between us,
in the simplest truth, though rather uncouth,
Oosik is, in fact, his penis!

Now the size alone of this walrus bone,
would indeed arouse envious thinking -
it is also a fact, documented and backed,
There is never a softening or shrinking!

This, then, is why the smile is so sly,
the walrus is rightfully proud.
Though the climate is frigid, the walrus is rigid,
Pray, why, is not man so endowed?

Added to this, is a smile you might miss -
Though the bull is entitled to bow -
The one to out-smile our bull by a mile
is the satisfied walrus cow!

It has been confirmed, I do in fact have a giant walrus penis. Now I need to go inform my wife, that despite what her stupid sister says... :D

(that good enough for you Eric)

Not only do you have a walrus penis... but it came with nuts, too!

Nick... table leg, eh? That must of been hard-on the floor.

I see many of you have boned up on your oosik knowledge. Jess

Be very careful when handling it. Rubbed the wrong way it will turn into a baseball bat.
