The subject line states it all can Buck repair a bent main blade of a 317? I bought this at evilbay and sadly discovered that the knife has a bent blade.Upon contacting the seller he tries to blame me by stating that I didn't ask any questions. My response was "it's incumbent upon the seller to reveal any defects in the product" he was selling. He then stated that he doesn't offer returns. He followed that up with asking at what price would I feel comfortable in keeping the knife.

I will try and contact Buck later today when they open and pose the same question. So what do members have to say about the ability to repair the main blade of this knife?

The answer is they can try. It may work, it may make it a little better, or they can replace the blade with a 110 blade.

I got a duke 500 with a gold etch blade and the tip was bent. That was back when Joe was in charge of the Warranty department so I contacted him. when the knife came back I knew it had the tip bent and repaired but anyone else would have a very hard time finding it. Mine had a much worse bend than what I see in the photo.

If it were me I would file a compliant with evil-bay. My guess is u will be reimbursed. Heating it to bend it will affect the hardness from the original heat treatment and trying to bend it cold anything could happen. Not sure if its covered under warranty since i doubt normal use of the knife caused it to bend. But that's just my 2cents.

Thanks again for our members thoughtful replies.

I have two more questions.Does this knife have any value and would anyone trust this to be a good user?

I bought a 426 once of the bay and it had a real bad bent tip the seller blamed it on me said I should’ve ask must be the same person lol . Anyway he didn’t accept returns I contacted ebay and they got involved and they made him take it back and give me a refund

If you don't want to do that I would have someone like LR do the best he could straightening it. It would be a great user just not perfectly straight. But it def is a collectible which would serve as a great user. If u decide to keep it and get it as straight as possible and need a sheath lmk. Don't know if a sheath come with it.

I sent an old 110 in, either 3rd or 4th version, with bent blade. Joe decided it had not been heat treated correctly. He said he could try to heat it, straighten and then heat treat it again, but certainly a risk of failure/breakage. Fortunately it went perfectly.

Looking back at pictures, it was a 4th 2nd.

Came back this way. Can’t believe I didn’t take an after top view.

Thanks gsea.I didn't receive a sheath with it.I'm trying to work it out with the seller.Although I did file for a return as well.

I'll let the members know the outcome of our discussion.

That's good to know.I'm glad it worked out for you. This my first Buck 317 and it's a little disappointing to receive one with such a problem.

I like these two blade folding hunters.I have several Case 6265's and I was hoping to add a 317 to the stable.I hope it's not forbidden to post a picture of Case knives on this Buck forum.

Funny because I am the opposite: a Buck guy who recently got a Case stockman from the auction site and found out it had a bent blade. It doesn't really bother me all that much though. That slight curve works out real well when peeling apples.

I have a 317 that the smaller blade is not bent, but off center and rubs the outer liner. Sent it to Joe, who was not as confident of a trouble free repair. I bought it as a user so just got spa treatment. Doesn’t affect performance and both blades are tight as a drum.

sporting, it's too bad you received a 317 in that condition. That is a good Buck model and it would fit nice in your collection. There are
plenty around with straight blades. DM

Paul Bos heat treating can fix it for you if you want to remove the blade and probably in prove the HT with some cryo, just talked to him this week. I believe it was less than $20 per blade, said he would do 1 blade or 1000. Really good people.

Well I'm happy to report that we reached an agreement. The seller packed this knife with a considerable amount of care. For that reason and the fact that he eventually seemed distressed about my concern about its condition,I accepted his offer. He refunded half of my money.Even though it has some problems I believe for $45.00 I can live with it.

I would like to thank all of the members who offered their opinions and advice.

Thank you for this information. It allows another option to bring this classic back to life.

I think I would put on a heavy glove and use the palm of my hand on the blade, with the blade tip on the table and the knife at a 30 degree angle. But that's me.
