I know I can't boil in the Sig since it's got a liner, but can I boil in the Bean canteens if I don't care about the outter coating?

They are made be Klean.

i boil in my kleen, but mine doesn't have the enamel on the outside.

as far as i know, you should be good to go if you don't want to keep them pretty...

Iuke - Sweet!! That's good to see.

Yep, Simon, I should have got the ones without enamel, we'll see what happens to the coating once I head it up.

Thanks fellas!!!

I'd imagine the coating would just bubble up and burn.

Boil away!

But don't count on the coating bubbling up below the water line.

Remember, you can boil water in a paper cup over an open flame because water never gets above 212 F in the liquid state

Of course it will get sooty and dirty.

myright: If you boil in your Kleen Kanteen, please post a pic or let us know how it ended up. I just bought an orange coated one this past weekend with the intention of boiling in it but I won't get to it for a couple weeks prolly.

I don't know if you can boil in it....I guess this depends on whether you can fit in it!! :D

If you want to boil WATER, well, sure...I don't think it will hurt anything. It just won't look nice forever...

Hmmm - I guess if I had a big enough bottle I could boil myself to get clean

Maybe even through in some pine needles to smell nice :D

Ive seen this alot lately. Why would you buy a painted bottle if you wanted to boil in it? Were these gifts or something? Just wondering, because the make em in plain stainless, which IMO looks better anyways.

Myright, and others with these bottles, Im not meaning to be an ass, just curious, because Ive seen alot of painted bottles lately.

Al the local stores don't seem to stock the plain jane stainless ones, all they ever have is the painted varieties. Plus, I usually boil in my usgi canteen cup, my ww2 canteen, or one of my homemade multi tin can stove setups.

Well there ya go. I forget some of you guys are lucky enough to have stores that stock these things. Whether it be painted or stainless.:(

I am with you man, I boil water in my GSI cup mostly, however I have boiled in my Guyot before. I once saw 27oz klean kanteens in unpainted stainless at my local basspro. I bought 3. I didnt need em, but was too excited to see em w/o buyin a few!!! I am happy the 27oz fits great in my bikes water bottle cage. Pretty cool.

Yeah, they're carrying em at Dick's Sporting Goods now. Don't know if they have any locations in Missouri though.

Cool they have a few in KC, and a new one is being built in Columbia which is close by. I am stoked, I like that place. My wife will hate goin to Columbia even more now, thats where the Basspro Outdoor world is, and she gets tired of me looking at weird stuff in there for hours.

If those bottles are coated on the outside they will ugly up a bit.

If they are anodized aluminum you can strip them down to bare aluminum.

Spray the outside with Easy-Off oven cleaner. Let it sit about 15 minutes. Repeat if it doesn't remove all of it.

Rinse and dry.

Finally, use a (dark) red ScotchBrite pad (available in the paint sections of hardware stores or at auto body supply stores) and some elbow grease to finish and add a brushed look to the aluminum. You can do this with wet to keep the scotchbrite from clogging up.

You can use the green ScotchBrite pads from the grocery store if you can't find the red ones. They sell Scotchbrand without the sponge backing in the cleaning isle. The green is just a little coarser.

You can use the scotchbrite to clean up the burnt look after using an uncoated one as well. Just lean into it.

You could boil in the Sigg bottle in a pinch, just have it full of water. I wouldn't do it unless I had to. With any of these bottles, you want to leave the cap off

That handy little roll of wire you should have in your PSK could be used to help haul the bottle in and out of the coals, aided by the bandana you always carry too, right? :)

I haven't found a stainless bottle with an interior coating. Why anyone would want to go to the trouble to paint a stainless bottle is beyond me, but they sell. I like the look of nekked steel.

Some use the large Heineken and Foster's beer cans for ultra-light boilers and they have coatings inside. There is some debate about leaching chemicals like BPA-- the same stuff that caused concerned with the polycarbonate bottles. In a survival situation the chemical exposure would be small and offset by reducing the chance of getting a bad bug.

If you need to find an uncoated one, check out your local health food store. All the ones around me seem to carry the plain ones nearly exclusively.

I would much rather boil with a stainless container than an aluminum container. Stainless can take much more heat and it's corrosion resistance is great. I do like those cylindric containers for boiling. They look like they would be easy to manage and maintain.

I've seen that Les Stroud boil water in plastic, 2 liter pop bottles. However I've been told by a friend of mine who is a trained chemist that you can do that but it loads the water with very toxic plasticizers and other toxic chemicals.

I think that metal containers are the only way to go IMO. Being able to boil water would certainly be a huge factor in staying hydrated. Bad parasite infested water is a horrible way to go. Good thread

Hey J, you ass.... :)

I got these two to have around the house. I have a few that would work for boiling just fine, but wanted to see if I decided to use these guys if it work or not.

I would have never purchased a coated bottle with the intention of boiling in one. I actually leave one on my desk at work and my wife uses the other one in her day-to-day travels.
