Can I break a car window with a knife?

Zac in the Wild just did a video on breaking car windows a few weeks ago. You can search for it on YouTube. It is an interesting video. I have seen videos of people slamming hammers and such into car windows and being unable to break them, so it is not as easy as one might think.
Agreed, the trick seems to be striking an area where the chance of flex is lowest. I usually go for a lower corner.

The one time I actually needed to break a window I was filling up the car and my knucklehead dog decided to lock the doors with the key in it. I just asked the attendant for a hammer... Did the job perfectly.

This thread reminded me of a funny story.

I have an old junker 87 Isuzu truck I use on the farm.

I locked the keys in the thing, and have no spare.

I grabbed a hammer and starting whacking the driver side window.

It didn't break.

I hit that thing harder and harder, to the point where my son was laughing at me....as the hammer did nothing.

Coincidently, I leaned on the window with my hand and it partially rolled down from the pressure.

Lol...

"Best Knife Material for slicing Monkeys?" Monkey fur is more coarse than reptile scales, is serrated appropriate if the monkeys are aggressive?

Knife Monkey is NOT amused.

But to clarify....some windows break easier than others.

If a person carries a purpose built glass breaker, it might be a good idea to find some windows to experiment on at a junkyard or where it's ok to make a mess.

I would think a knife tip is not a great idea, as it could probably very easily deflect and cause injury.

Out of all the people on BF, how many have actually needed to BREAK out a window to escape from a car?
Not out, but in, to free people in a rollover accident. I used the boys axe I carry in the back of the Suburban. I didn't break the glass, but used the axe to get between the glass and body to pry the rear pickup truck glass out whole of the upside down truck. Less sharp stuff for the guy crawling in the truck on his stomach to get to the occupants.

To answer your question directly: 'NO'!

And please don't run around with scissors!

[Inside the car? Plant the seatbelt hook against 10 O'clock on the driver's side/2 O'clock on the passenger side window and push like you're pregnant. ]

[Outside the car? Use a screwdriver in those same spots!]

Sure you can break an automobiles windshield with a knife and I will tell you how. You place the knife up against the windshield where you want it to break and then hit the knife with a 3lb. hammer as hard as you can for as many times it takes for the windshield to break. Job accomplished!

In my experience once the vehicle rolls over all or most of the windows shatter anyways, making it pretty easy to crawl out.

As for breakers, I have tried unsuccessfully to use the glass breaker on the Umnumzaan to break a window. My buddies do demo derbies and you have to take the glass out ahead of time. It is more fun to break it than take the door all apart. The Zaan and hammers bounced right off. Funny enough the easiest thing to do was launch the spare tire at it. The whole window would just cave in.

in this instance, all the windows were intact. The driver’s side door was up against a hillside, and the passenger side door was jammed and wouldn’t open. One guy had a small glass breaker hammer and used it to gain access to the passenger. The driver had been thrown into the back of the extended cab so we removed the rear glass to assess and extract him.

Disclaimer*

The windshield will take a center crack like a rock chip. Reaching out from that. Fairly busted up.

The side windows and rear window. Will crack to tiny little cubes. No matter where you apply the...Automatic center punch.

It's also loud. When that tempered glass gives way. It's a loud shattering pop.

Some cars have keyless entry now, which is nice for that situation. Otherwise, I would use my Valet key to unlock the door.

Hit the low B-pillar corner. It has the least amount of flex. I believe new vehicles after 2018 have laminated safety glass for the front windows. A punch will not break it the way it will break single layer glass.

I mean.. yeah, I guess.. maybe.. but why not try to find a more appropriate tool for the job? I equipped myself and my family with Resqme tools a few years back.. small glass breakers/seatbelt cutters.. we all keep them in our vehicles. I'd rather try my luck at breaking a window with something designed for for breaking a window than a random knife that was not..
