Hey Guys. I have been a lurker for years and finally joined this year. This is my first post. I am a brand new maker from Northern Michigan in Petoskey.

I have a .25 stock of 80crv2 steel from alpha. I have it in the shape of an old tradesman/butcher/survival knife. I'm currently working the bevels w a file by hand. No jig yet. Trying to learn by hand till our 2x72 arrives in a few weeks. I feel hand filing is great learning. The problem I have is I have a nice bevel going but it needs to go higher. There are angle grinder marks just on surface above the bevels. There is room for it. The plunge lines I made first were too high and deep so I need to take the bevel higher. Should I hand file or wait for the grinder? Thank you guys.

Sounds good. In a few hours I'll get to it. I researched some similar knives and I can bring that bevel really high Thank you!

Got to keep the lines the same on each side. I want it to be right on the angles and not disrupt the flow of the knife. I'm learning it's about the design and not necessarily what I want it to look like

Oh you do great. I understand you. I'm just so new to this I don't see it like you do yet. I will get to it this morning and try and even out the bevels I have and then raise them after scribing the line

Wow I'm doing the filing after using my calipers and black marker on the blade. Now I can see I'm working in the right area. Thank you guys

It is not easy to keep constant angle when you use file freehand .....periodically use file this way, that will help you a lot .

Yes I was going back and forth. It seems I am on the right track. I may have gotten to excited w the chainsaw file and the plunge lines are a bit deep and high. The raised bevel will take care of that I hope. My partner in this will be here later and I can share this help from you guys w him. Thank you. I'll keep you posted
